Rarely do such activities receive more than a passing mention in "mainstream" analyses, and even fuller discussions tend to "fence off" the phenomenon from the analysis of the truly consequential deeds of our age. Nonetheless, I do not believe a correlation between the subject and the elections, as of recent, can be ignored.

----------------------------------------
"apocalyptic time" - that perception of time in which the End of the World (variously imagined) is so close that its anticipation changes the behavior of the believer. Such perceptions of time operate on several levels of cognition, of individual, group, and mass psychology, and have been closely studied by anthropologists, sociologists, and psychologists for decades.
----------------------------------------

The amorphousness of the war on terrorism carries with it a paranoid edge, the suspicion that terrorists and their supporters are everywhere and must be "pre-emptively" attacked lest they emerge and attack us. Since such a war is limitless and infinite--extending from the farthest reaches of Indonesia or Afghanistan to Hamburg, Germany, or New York City, and from immediate combat to battles that continue into the unending future--it inevitably becomes associated with a degree of megalomania as well.

--------------------------------------
Fundamentalists of various stripes have tapped into pop culture and its new technologies to spread the gospel. They have even attracted niche subcultures with such organizations as the Christian Tattoo Association, which includes over 100 member shops. Some Christian bands now embrace punk and goth styles. While the rest of the music industry has seen a decline since the events of September 11, the Christian music market has had a 13.5% increase, perhaps a reflection of the very search for meaning that such a horrific tragedy has engendered? But the second coming is currently being delayed by an unfortunate decline in drug abuse among teenagers and a weak showing by the antichrist.

Although so much more could be said on the matter, my true intentions where to hear your thoughts, as I do not recall a discussion in this context. I, obviously, believe this phenomenon to be most detrimental to our society, hence SAECULUM.AUREUM

What say you to a poll then? On the matter of whether or not you share these beliefs, and your reasons.

Christian media, like the Left Behind books (the EU and USA fight WW3 in Israel causing the rapture), or movies like Meggido (basically the same plot), fuel this obsession with the end times.

the REAL Meggido actually happened. i know a bunch of zealots were slaughtered or something. actually, they were killed by the left wing of the ruling govt. i think.

I'd say that the true scary thing is how proactive the fundies have begun. It's as if they're not content simply hope that the rapture happens in their lifetime, they're doing everything in their power to get the job done. Expanding Israel's borders. Returning to biblically-based law. Destroying the environment at a blinding pace (called Dominion Theory, basically we aren't going to be around long enough to need any resources in the future so we might as well use them all up now). Starting a war in/with the middle-east. Blind devotion to a president that was 'appointed by god.'

Christian media, like the Left Behind books (the EU and USA fight WW3 in Israel causing the rapture), or movies like Meggido (basically the same plot), fuel this obsession with the end times.

These are all things that the evangelicals overwhelmingly support. They are also things that point toward a country hellbent on ending the world.

A while back I was thinking of starting CAPA, Citizens Against Premature Armeggedon. Just to monitor the crazies and make sure people are aware that there is a large, very influential group in our society that is very interested in the world ending.

First off, you're too verbose in your writing - which may turn a lot of people away. Don't take that as an insult, I'm trying to help.

Anyway...

I don't think that the end of the world will happen in my lifetime. I also find a strange humor in the way that some nutjobs are crying "the end times are upon us because Bush won an election". Holy shit, the sky is falling. The same people who are welcoming the apocalypse are also those who don't believe in organized religion or God. Go figure...
