Sitting around the fire that evening we enjoyed a grand meal cooked by our new chef. He wouldn't talk to us other than to ask what we wanted and to instruct us on what ingredients to get but we didn't mind much. Even if he were able to give us news of the outside world it wouldn't do much for us but heighten our longing to escape this island. We went to bed that night exhausted from our prior nights swim and sinking into a comfortable bed was bliss.
I woke the next morning feeling fresh and rested. Our cook was already working on breakfast and soon we were eating ham and eggs. Ah eggs! Denny had gotten up this morning and gone for a walk. While he was out he stumbled across a nest with six eggs in it. You really don't notice how much you miss some of the simplest things until you get the chance to have them again. We spent the morning cleaning up our camp and getting rid of some of the things we no longer needed. Coming across a fallen friends belongings all the time had really started to take it's toll so we put everything together into one of the crates that was now empty and swore to each other that anyone who left the island would do their best to return the items to that victims families. There was some debate about this; after all if you were grieving for a lost family member would you want something so mundane as clothes, or a toothbrush returned to you? In the end it was decided that there were a few items that might hold significance for family so everything would be returned.
Our culinary friend prepared crab legs and rice for lunch and once again it far surpassed our expectations. He was really quite a genius when it came to working with the minimal ingredients we could provide. That afternoon we lazed around our fire, full, rested, with no pressing engagements we were all feeling less than motivated to go out exploring, so we sat and talked.
We talked about our families, our jobs, and the things we liked to do for fun. Sadness soon crept into our conversation, talking about the things we held dear and took for granted in life soon brought our conversation back to our lost friends and our remaining time on the island. Many of the same arguments were rehashed until all of us were feeling too down in the dumps to talk anymore.
I decided to go for a walk and when Rachel asked if she could join me I was more than happy to accept her company even though we probably wouldn't be able to walk real far or fast. Rachel's injury was still bothering her but she wanted to walk as much as she could to try to work the soreness out of it. So, we walked. We walked in silence for quite a while before Rachel asked me if I'd loved Gina.
"For the first time in my life I think I actually did love her. Obviously we hadn't known each other long but... you know, they say that a traumatic experience can bring people together faster than if they were just living an ordinary life. I think that was the case with us. It might not have worked when we got home but for the time being, I think, yes, I did."
"I'm sorry Ben, this is just so awful, all of it, but to have fallen for someone and then to lose that person, well, I'm sure that it's incredibly hard."
We came to a nice spot on the beach and sat down together. Rachel rested her head on my shoulder and we sat like that for some time. I liked Rachel but I had no thoughts of pursuing a relationship with her, after all I thought I'd found love and then it was taken from me. So when she asked me to hold her I thought nothing of it beyond the comfort of the closeness of a kindred spirit, and it did feel nice to have someone in my arms, offering solace when I was feeling pain. When we returned to camp we found the others playing a game that they'd made up. They looked up from their game and, though I might be mistaken, I thought I saw envy or anger in a few of their expressions. Until now I thought the other guys had been ok with mine and Gina's relationship but now I wasn't so sure. Whatever, it's not like I'm stealing Rachel from anyone; in fact, our friendship is just that friendship, nothing more.
They went back to their game and Rachel stood behind one of them watching, I went to bed and laid down, thinking about Gina, and what it might have been like if we'd met under other circumstances. I hadn't been in bed long before I heard shouting outside our shelter.
I got up and ran out to see Chris grappling with one of the cameramen. The others stood watching, horrified, as Chris punched the cameraman who fell to the ground. Instead of getting up he pulled a gun from a shoulder holster and shot Chris.
Everything seemed to be moving in slow motion. I watched as Chris's head exploded spraying most of us with a fine mist of blood and brain and then I saw Denny jump the shooter punching him over and over until one of the other crew pulled him off warning him to stay back by putting the barrel of his gun against Denny's temple. The cameraman who'd shot Chris pulled himself up off the ground and then winked at Denny. I could see the rage in Denny's face as the crew withdrew from the clearing leaving us with Chris's lifeless body and more horrible experience.
"What the hell happened?"
"That camera guy was giving Chris all kinds of shit and then he called Chris a cheater and before any of us could do anything Chris was punching him and, well, you saw the rest. How can they do this? Aren't there some rules or laws against this kind of treatment? We have got to get off this island!"
Back to that, as much as all of us wanted to be away from here and out from under the cruelty of our captors we still hadn't figured out a way to escape. None of us rejoined Denny's argument; instead we turned to Chris and began preparing him to be buried next to the others on the landing beach. We morosely carried his lifeless body and dug his grave. Rachel spotted a conch shell further up the beach and gently placed it at the head of his grave next to the stones marking the other's graves. We returned to camp and all of us went to bed, not hungry for dinner, not wanting to talk anymore, just wanting to find some escape from this hellish existence.
