LOVING THE GRIND - A Necro Fable
The machine is everything and I feed it.
It is my motherfather and if I keep it healthy and happy it feeds me too.
There is me and him and the machine. I used to think that the world was him but now I know better. I used to think that he was the master because he brought me here and taught me how to take care of it... because he gives me the meat to feed it.
His name is Mute and he doesn't have a tongue. I know his name because he wrote it for me once on a piece of skin and then I fed it to the machine like all the flesh he brings me.
I know how to read but I don't remember when I learned how. I think it was a long time ago when I was someone else. I think I used to have a name too but I can't remember it either.
There are names scratched into the stone wall where he keeps me but I can't recall which one I scratched there.
It doesn't matter.
There is no one here to speak my name anyways.
There is just me and him and the machine.
I used to hate him. I used to rebel against him back when I was someone else. I would pretend not to understand his language of gestures and grunts so he taught me about futility.
He bit off my finger the first time and an ear the second.
I stopped rebelling because of the pain and because, the more of me he ate, the harder it was to feed the machine.
For awhile I loved him. I thought he was my father and I did everything I could to please him but he never loved me back. He never gave me anything but more bodyparts with which to feed it.
So now I don't feel anything for him. I just obey.
In the end I realized the truth of my existence. I understood that it loved me more than I had ever realized.
It sings me to sleep at night sometimes. It gifts me with a chorus of grinding gear and clanging teeth and the low rumble of its engine.
I keep it oiled and shiny silver and in return it gives me my crimson meal.
Yes... it loves me as I love it.
These days it has been feeding me well. I think that, one day soon, I will be as fat and oily as Mute himself.
I wonder if it isn't time for myself to prove to the machine how I feel. I think it would love me even more if I fed him to it.
Yes!
Then we could be alone together. Then I could venture out of the basement and find the meat on my own and the machine would never have to go hungry again.
I could find where he keeps the young ones. It likes them best, their bones are soft and easy to grind.
Soon... very soon I will make things as they should be, but not now.
He's still stronger than I am. He's still bigger.
I will wait and grow.
For now, I will be content to fulfill my purpose.
I feed the machine.
