I'll just dive right into it, as I feel the title adequately covers what I will be writing about.
I would really like to address this whole notion of 'this is my country', because I hear a ton of this in Canada as well, even though our immigration woes do not seem to be nearly as bad as yours. Now, I can't speak for everyone, but I am from Canada. Now, my family came to Canada in the 1950s from England, thus making them immigrants (duh). The thing is that there have been Japanese and Chinese immigrants in our country since the early 1900s, and have deep roots within Canada. Same with the Irish and Italians. With that said, who is to say that it is 'our country'. I agree with one member
who said that the only real native people left in the UK is the Scottish.
Why do you feel so threatened by immigration? There are plenty of good and bad things immigrants bring to the table. Here, in Ottawa, the Asians contribute vastly to our high tech advancement. The ones who can't contribute on the same intellectual level are efficient restaurant owners, cooks and shopkeepers who offer their exotic culture and fine cuisine in the city's 'Chinatown' for all to enjoy. Then, there are the Arabs. Although there aren't many here, they are easily on par with white contribution in the field of science and generate some brilliant ideas when it comes to architecture and biology. There are others who are perfectly satisfied with their shitty jobs like driving a cab. Oh well, better than having a tank chase you on your way to work. Immigrants do contribute and contribute well. Just because there are a few lazy immigrants who set a bad example by screwing the system shouldn't further taint your misconstrued opinion. However, there are just as many whites who quick to take advantage of the good 'ol welfare cheque as opposed to getting off their asses and doing something.
You talk about your 'no go zones' for whites. Well there are no go zones for white dominated societies as well. Take me for example. For some reason, I look rich. I am by no means rich (trust me on this one) but I was born handsome (to stroke my own ego), and quite frankly, look like a preppy. I have to get up in the morning and know I have to transfer buses in the 'poor neighbourhood'. It is a damn long walk to that second bus. This is a fairly rough neighbourhood, and there are some bars I would not dream of stepping
into. However, the area is dominated by whites by a long shot and I have been given dirty looks and have only been yelled at once, a weak comment along the lines of 'get outta here pretty boy'. What I am trying to get across is that discrimination of
one form or another takes place EVERYWHERE, and you can't hide from it. So even in a white society I feel threatened by certain neighbourhoods because of the way I dress and conduct myself I could be making myself vulnerable to muggings, drunks, harrassment, etc.
As far as the Christmans thing, I think it is great to learn about new cultures and traditions, and would have loved that opportunity when I was younger. See, schools should not be bothered with trying to instill certain religious values in children, but rather to explore the different beliefs out there, and let the parents teach them religious values. Come on man, separation of church and state says it all right there. I find carols lift the spirits, but if you must have religion in the school the children would find looking at other forms of winter celebrations very fascinating.
I don't want to paint a picture of Canada as this multi-cultural and yet vastly white dominated dream world, because it is not. Conflict seems to be rising between blacks and whites here. I remember one instance in middle school where a friend leaned into a van full of blacks and said 'Y'all going to Africa?'. I also remember a time when I was in line @ Tim Hortons (a donut/coffee shop) with a friend, and as I waited for him, a black man darted in front of him and tried to order first. My friend shoved him aside and said 'wait your turn, nigger'. Black jokes have always been extremely popular in the
locker room in high school, and outside of school as well. I also hear of stories on the bus lines of white kids getting beat up by blacks, on the sole basis that they are white. Of course this is going to anger the average white man, since isolated incidents I mentioned (such as the Tim Hortons thing) do not appear in the local newspaper for all to read. Actually, generally speaking most racists these days are dumb, uneducated teenagers who think it is amusing to spray-paint swastikas on people's lockers, and write 'die niggers die' and 'KKK' on the homes of black people.
Racists tend to have two characteristics: fear and lack of education. And most of you encorporate both of those characteristics in your articles.

I'm white. I'm only a little racist, no more discriminating than I would expect people of other races to be of me. I have issues with some aspects of other people's cultures being practiced around me - I just don't like 'em. And I know that I and my lifestyle rub lots of people the wrong way too. Where I live, people are racist to whites all the time. I avoid where I can, but sometimes the lions meet the zebras at the watering hole and shit goes down. Know what I mean?
Sure it's based in fear, greed, ignorance and the like. But I also think it's instinct. We are, by design, meant to beat each other down. I can't help it. When I try, I feel fake. I'd rather just be myself and deal with it.
