While preparing for Jeff's visit I found what appeared to be an old electric chair at an antiques dealer in the small town near the cabin. I was just walking past the store when I saw it out of the corner of my eye, I turned back and walked into the store and asked the proprietor about the chair. He said he'd bought it in a state auction. A mental institution run by the state had had the chair and now years later being unable to use such a device on mental patients had put it up for auction. He bought it thinking it was an interesting piece but admitted it still gave him the willies every time he walked past it. I gave him a thousand dollars in cash not even asking if it was for sale and he parted with it as easily as I'd given him the money.
Now that Jeff is here it's time to introduce him. I'd put the chair on an appliance dolly and now I'm working it down the stairs to the cellar. As I near the bottom of the stairs I see Jeff's face as he recognizes what it is I'm bringing down and I have to say the look on his face is priceless. I wordlessly unload the chair in the center of the room ignoring Jeff's protests and whining pleas. After I'm done unloading it I silently collect the dolly and walk back out never once saying anything to Jeff. When I close the cellar door behind me I finally let out the laughter I'd been holding back.
Oh man, you should have heard him: "Ben, what is that, is that what I think it is? What are you going to do to me? Ben, please stop this madness, we can come to some sort of agreement. Ben! Please! Come on man, I was just doing my job!" he was still yelling and crying when I left. When I bought the chair I thought I might use it right away but this is so much better. So much of what they did to us on that island revolved around the mental stress and I think Jeff needs to experience that stress himself so I'm just going to let the chair sit there for a day or two, Jeff's silent guest always gnawing at his sanity, mocking him in it's cold silence. I don't even know if the damn thing works the way it used to but I do know that it's working on Jeff right now, I can still hear him yelling trying to get me to talk to him, begging to be released.
Later I take Jeff his meal for the day, take out from Outback, and again he implores me to talk to him, instead I just set the tray of food down on the seat of the chair and walk out. I have work to do this evening so I decide to take a nap. Even the busiest beaver needs his rest you know.
Forty
I didn't sleep much last night, I looked all around the cellar looking for any escape from this rattrap and I can't find anything to get me out of this. I can't believe the man doing this to me is the same man I met at his interview. He's still self-assured, confident, and intelligent but instead of the feeling compassionate man we selected for the show He's now a cold heartless demon. I know now for sure that he's been killing the others; I should have thought more of it sooner. Maybe I could have stopped him, or at least gotten myself out of danger, instead I arrogantly insisted to myself that Ben couldn't touch me, couldn't hurt me. And now, here I am, stuck in a dark cell waiting for the return of my captor.
I can hear Ben moving around upstairs. It sounds like he's moving furniture around, something heavy dragging across the floor above. I watch as the cellar door opens and at first all I can see is the silhouette of a large object followed by Ben's strong form. As he descends the stairs and my eyes adjust to the extra light I see what it is he's lowering into the cellar and still I can't comprehend it. It looks like an old electric chair, like the one in The Green Mile, "Old Sparky". I think to myself that it can't possibly be one of those old chairs but as he reaches the lower stairs I see that that is indeed what it is.
I try to remain calm and begin trying to get Ben's attention but no matter what I say he won't acknowledge me, instead he just unloads the chair and sets it in the middle of the room. I look at it imagining that I can see stains on it, that it's staring back at me and I realize Ben plans to use it on me. Now I'm screaming at Ben, I know it's not dignified but, "holy shit!" he can't possibly be planning to do this! That cold bastard takes the dolly the chair was on and walks out of the room closing the cellar door behind him.
I walk to the head of the stairs and continue to try to reach Ben. I can't stay with that thing in the middle of the room; it's just too creepy. When I walked past it to the stairs I thought I smelled some long forgotten odor of death or pain, whether I did or not is not a question I really want to find the answer to. I wait on the stairs, hoping to hear Ben by the door and finally I do, he's opening it and he's got a tray of food on it. I walk back down the stairs and Ben locks the door behind him before finishing the trek down the stairs. Again, I ask him to reconsider, I offer him money, I offer him anything I can think of but he continues ignoring me. Ben walks over to that nasty old chair and sets the tray down right on the seat! How can he do this? How is this possible? I'm yelling again, I can hear my frantic pleas but still Ben ignores me walking back up the stairs, out the door, and I listen as Ben throws the bolt home once again locking me in my cell.
I'm not eating that. That sick monster brought me food from the Outback, I suppose he thinks I'll see some irony in this and maybe I do since I'm thinking about it but all I can see is dead meat sitting on a chair that emanates death from it's very presence. No I'll not eat this meal, he can't make me.

I can't help thinking of Jeff as Timmy Turner's teacher in Fairly Oddparents.
"Noo! Not the electric chair! I need...FAIRY GOD PARENTS!!!"
Okay, enough of that. This kicks the proverbial ass.

Another perfect chapter. The way Ben ignores him like the cameramen were told to do, the way he tortures him with thoughts of what might happen, the way he brings him "goodies" that really aren't all that wanted as much as just getting out... perfect down to the last words.

The way this is slowly gaining a following is great. That may be the only advantage to 40+ installments. Anyway, back on the MRR.

I was reading these all right behind that guy down there, and am glad I stumbled across this series! Now that I'm caught up, I have to wait for the next one like the rest... ah, suck.

I was bored and decided to read all of these today. I'm glad I did.
Check out: 2005 Novel & Short Story Writer's Market, published by Bowling and Writer's Digest, available for 25.99 in all major bookstores. It's handy-dandy.
