Eight days remain in what has seemed an eternity on this island. The remaining five of us are tired and beaten. Rachel's ankle is feeling a bit better and she's far more mobile than she has been. We woke this morning and slowly ate what would normally have been a great breakfast; the chef we won is really quite good at his job. But once again, the deaths of our "competitors" weighs heavily on us. We didn't do a whole lot of anything for the next couple of days. Denny and Randy tried to get the rest of us to play their game but we weren't interested in participating in the catalyst that got Chris killed, so we sat. Nobody talked much, what more was there to say? We just sat, staring at each other, wondering what was left of this hellish "game" and whether or not we could really live through the end of it.
Now with five days left we woke and had breakfast, Denny had gone for water and on his way back discovered that we had tree mail. He brought it to the fire for all of us to read.
"Five of you left now, with five days to play,
Today is a new, bright, and beautiful day,
This evening the last of your challenges commence
Live through this one and you'll be sent home hence."
Once again all of us are perplexed, what could they possibly have in mind for us now? We debate it again with all the same arguments and once again arrive at the conclusion that there is no conclusion but to play it out and do our best to survive. We apprehensively spend the day cleaning up and bundling our things, if none of us return we do not want to leave a burden on the others to go through our belongings and decide what gets sent home. Jeff comes to camp and when he's got all our attention begins:
"I'm proud of you all for making it this far. I know this hasn't been easy on you; this challenge will be the most difficult yet. None of you are guaranteed to leave the island, none of you are guaranteed to live, but you are all incredibly close to winning a million dollars. Your mail says the challenge begins tonight and that's partially true. Tonight you have the chance to prepare to live through the last four days on the island. The real challenge begins tomorrow morning at sunrise. We have hired one of the world's best big game hunters; he will hunt for quarry he's never hunted beginning tomorrow. This quarry is intelligent, able to think and reason, and just as vulnerable as any other. You are that quarry. Return to the crew's quarters after sunset of the last day and you win one million dollars and will be sent home as quickly as possible. All of you are eligible to win if you just live through the hunt. I have to tell you that you've been a pleasurable group to work with and I wish you all the best of luck."
This is unbelievable even for them. We're going to be pitted against a hunter? This island is really not that big, how are we supposed to evade him for four days while camera crews follow us? I turn to the others and as quietly as possible tell them the first thing they have to do is ditch the cameraman who follows them out of camp. We can't wait to leave camp until the morning because we've got to ditch our shadows. I'm leaving everything at camp. I know I can best this hunter and if I get the chance, I'll kill him. I say my goodbyes to the friends I've learned to love in the past five weeks and walk out of the clearing.
I head straight for the peak in the center of the island with a cameraman right on my tail. I've decided to climb the cliffs on the side of the peak, the cameraman will either have to try to follow with all of his equipment, or go around to the other side to use the path to get to the top. If he follows I hope to be able to climb faster to lose him. If he goes around then I'll detour so that he finds no one when he reaches the top.
I begin the climb, looking back I see the cameraman standing at the base of the cliffs talking on his radio, getting advice I assume. Soon he begins to follow and I push to reach the top well ahead of him. As I pull myself over the ridge I'm astonished to see another cameraman coming up the trail. That bastard behind me must have called him in. I do the only thing I can think to do, I'm slow to get up so the new cameraman approaches and as soon as he's close enough to grab I reach out and get hold of his arm. As I grab him I begin to spin throwing him over the cliff. I've never killed a man before and I don't want to now but I really don't know any other way if they're going to cheat to keep me on film. I hear his screams as he plummets to earth joined by shouts and screams from the other cameraman. No time to look now, I've got to go while I have a chance because I'm sure some of the yelling involves getting someone else up here as quickly as possible.
It's dark now, knowing someone else will be headed up the trail I move about fifteen feet over and climb back down the cliff as quietly as I can. I see the first cameraman going up next to me but I'm fairly certain he didn't see me. Now I need a place to hide, I'm going to need to sleep so that I'm ready for tomorrow. Four days to go and it's all or nothing.
