This is the product of my Friday night alone...with a bottle of Jim Beam and no good dating prospects.

I remember the first time I ever heard this song in it's original form. I think I was 14. I was sitting on my bed in my room, when suddenly this gawd-awful noise began emanating from my stereo speakers. "What the HELL IS THAT!?" I thought. Although my radio could receive the signal, my mind was not yet attuned to the wavelength that was Nirvana. They called into question everything that I had previously perceived as music and pretty much rearranged it overnight. Now, thirteen years later, after what will most likely be the final official release by the surviving members of Nirvana, "With the Lights Out", I can finally return the favor...

A part of me likes to think that Kurt would have appreciated this version for its unabashed popiness, but the other more realistic side says he would have surely hated it. It's no secret that he grew to revile this song and everything it eventually stood for while he was alive, but it is my fantasy that he might hear this wherever he is and laugh at the final dismemberment and degradation of a song that helped change the face of music for a generation...and then, it pleases me to muse, he could learn to hate it in an entirely new way.

Anyway, here's the song. I hope you enjoy it.

P.S. For those of you who missed it. I also remade Lounge Act: http://www.electrictoothsyndrome.com/songs/Lounge_Act.MP3

...or you can just go to the parent directory http://www.electrictoothsyndrome.com/songs/ and see everything that way. If anyone has any suggestions for cover songs they'd like to hear remade, let me know. I might just make it my next drunkened project/pasttime.

How about 'Smokey Robinson - Tracks of my Tears' done in a shouty thrash metal style. What? I'd buy it.

lol man.

Nirvana stole "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and had to pay millions in compensation. Song done well but it wasn't Nirvana's.

--------------------------

Sorry, dude, but you're full of shit. There have been questions raised about the similarity between Boston's "More Than a Feeling" and this song, but they are quickly dismissed when you listen side by side. The only similarity is the rhythm. Like this remake, however, the chords are entirely different. Actually this version is closer to Boston's song than the original "SMTS" chord-wise.

Its good, but hear this...Beatles and Nirvana songs should never be covered as its impossible to make them "better."

Having Nirvana in the same sentence as The Almighty Beatles is blasphemous and vomit-inducing.

Genuinely impressed. For some reason I feel like I'm listening to Bob Dylan sing in Hanson, doing a cover of a Smashmouth ballad. Either way, great stuff. Very interpretive.

Anybody ever tell you your voice is similar to Michael Stipes?

On the serious side, I thought this was very good. The only thing I would change is that I would remove the organ/synthesizer. It felt busy with it.

But really nicely done, I enjoyed that alot.

Willzone: I have no illusions about this being better. But I see where you're coming from. I would never try to remake this stuff unless I was changing it in some fundamental way, because of what you said...really can't be done better.

The point here is that it's not even the same song. The melody and all the chords are entirely different. If you listen to them side by side, you'll notice the differences even more. The only thing that is even similar besides the lyrics is the rhythm and the basic structure. All I really hope to do with this stuff is intrigue a few Nirvana fans with some novelty.

They called into question everything that I had previously perceived as music and pretty much rearranged it overnight.

I felt the same, but long before they got radio play. (Their biggest influence, The Pixies, I could never acquire a taste for. I think Nirvana's best album is Bleach, but radio-friendly Nevermind is still near the top.) Good work.

Shlongy, if I wanted to hear terrible music I would smash a cat into a wall by its tail, don;t bother posting your crap.

And ETC, just make sure if you ever get a record deal or something to get permission for the covers, that bitter sweet symphony thing was tragic.

Shlongy: I wasn't aware this was a shtick. I have always wanted to remake the entire Nevermind album, that's all. You are seeing the beginning of that.

Prof: I can prove this is me. Since it was recorded in multitrack, I can give you any mix you want. I can take out everything but the guitar and vocal if you like, etc. I can even take pictures of my studio. It will take a little initiative, but if the questioning gets too bad, that's always an option. I am not Gibberish...and this is no Mona Lisa.
