Funny, these men vs. women discussions have been so popular on ubersite lately and I just got called a bitch. hooorahhh! And why? Because I'm a squeaky wheel. Because I like to argue. Because I'm going to law school and I like to be able to read different views and represent what I believe in, and dissect arguments that aren't well founded.
Isn't it interesting when a woman is assertive and eager to offer opinions to male counterparts, she becomes a 'bitch.' Truly, it reminds me of reading "Reviving Ophelia" when I was a teen-ager, because some guy at school called me a bitch when I was honest with him about something or other. What makes a woman acceptable? Passive tendencies? Do people only say "What a nice girl" about girls that aren't career oriented or assertive?
Is a woman allowed to be argumentative in an intellectual forum (which occasionally ubersite aspires to...occasionally) and have a disagreement with someone without being a bitch? Great question for ubersite I think...
Where is the line drawn? I think of a bitch as someone that is purposely harmful and attempts to do things to make others lives worse. I never do that, unless trying to point out to someone that they may be overlooking something (which they can similarly do to me).

I thought I would delve back into the history of uber to see all the quality posts there were in the old days before all us peasants arrived and made it rubbish.

Life's a bitch and so am I. :o)
I like that the female presence on Ubersite has become far more vocal of late.

being called a bitch isn't a big deal, i just thought it would be nice to discuss why women, when they disagree, automatically become 'bitches' or 'sluts', etc.
i think cat's a boy. I'm pretty sure actually.

I was discussing this last night over dinner with a friend who is not only a barrister (I think trial lawyer for Americans) but also a feminist academic. (FYI - she is straight, married with two boys, gorgeous, 40's, very sweet and funny.)
Her belief was societal changes over the past 50 years have emasculated (from the traditional sense) many men, for many reasons, the two most obvious:
1. equalling of the sexes, altering the perception of status roles, challenging the competitive male ego and providing frustration, and
2. reduction in manual labour work - both in sense of roles and perceived value. As male dominated manual labour reduced, it lead to more roles in technology and skill based work, where women have traditionally fared well.
She also noted that 60% of Australian university students are female and last year's graduating law class was 63% female, medicine graduates 65% female... I'll just take that at face value because I don't have a reason to doubt her, nor could I be bothered.
Misogynists still exist and need to use whatever tactics they can to feel elevated over empowered women; ergo small balls = big mouths.
Then she told a hilarious fart joke and we all called her a bitch.

:) right on loren.
"Anyway, if you are strong and assertive you will have to learn to deal with being called a bitch. BTW, deal with DOES NOT equal accept. " --- JP, in that case, being a bitch is fine.
it's funny how this word is thrown around, which is precisely why I mentioned it. Other words that some men throw around about women, with no clear conception of what they're trying to communicate: slut (wonderful double standard there), whore, fat ____ , etc...

Bitch is so played out. Nobody (especially the idiots that use it), have any idea what they are trying to get across anymore (if ever). Christ, guys are calling guys bitches. That makes sense.
The only way it bothers anyone is when they pick their own definition of it, their perception. These are people who want to get angry and offended.
Here's what I think:
As far as "boys" calling women bitches, I witness it when they've been dumped, or have their fragile egos hurt when a woman won't return their advances, hence the "evil bitch whore." If he feels like he's been outsmarted in a conversation/debate, then it's "stupid fucking bitch." The list goes on.
SO - "BITCH" users - I say: KNOCK yourselves OUT! I still win, because? I don't give a shit.
Bitch, oops, I meant

Yea, this is a patriarchal society and has been so for many years. For the last 30 women have been on the road to more power and equality, but we aren't there yet. We still like our women quiet and submissive. If she's different she's a bitch. I'm representing society's views here, not mine. I like a strong, independent woman. Anyway, if you are strong and assertive you will have to learn to deal with being called a bitch. BTW, deal with DOES NOT equal accept.
Anyway, there are lots of good lawyers. Most people opinions about lawyers are due to trial lawyers, which is not representative of lawyers on the whole. There a saying in the law communities, "Trial lawyers are the lawyers that weren't good enough to get a real job." Most trial lawyers were toward the bottom of their class (there are many exceptions). Imagine if people judged your field by the lowest 25%.

Mr NY is right - schooling in the law is one thing. Career lawyers are paid to represent a point of view for their client(s). This does take understanding and taking to task both sides of all issues incurred, but it's an ignoble profession by many means.
Yes, I have undertaken some legal training, but I would not become a lawyer for World peace. Legal training can be a hell of an asset in many other careers.
Doesn't make YOU a bitch, though.

Law school? Change your vocation or drop your arguement. Why? Lawyers don't argue or have sides. Lawyers think rules and law are a challenge. A thing to manipulate. Just like a basketball player fouling the opponent to gain a tactical advantage, you study the law to find ways to use them to your advantage, not because your actions are 'just' but because you just want to prove you're clever.
Are you a bitch? naaah lawyers are worse.
