At first I thought this was a once in a lifetime phenomina, when I'd met a Canadian girl who actually thought they had been at war with America. Then, thanks to Ubersite, I've seen this myth has been vastly blown out of proportion.
America never invaded Canada. This was actually the war of 1812, which was Britain VS the U.S. This was started, among many, many other reasons, when the British refused to stop sinking and capturing American trader boats.
"The United States declared War on Great Britain on June 12, 1812. The war was declared as a result of long simmering disputes with Great Britian. The central dispute surrounded the impressment of American soldiers by the British. The British had previously attacked the USS Chesapeake and nearly caused a war two year earlier. In addition, disputes continued with Great Britain over the Northwest Territories and the border with Canada. Finally, the attempts of Great Britain to impose a blockade on France during the Napoleonic Wars was a constant source of conflict with the United States."

Yes, there were disputes over the boarder with Canada, but this was before Canada was a country. Being just a territory, it, and all its occupants, remained British. Just like the French & Indian War, when British colonists in America fought the French in Canada. Yes they were in what would later become America and Canada, but no, they were not Americans or Canadians. It is still, and always has irrefeudably been, Britain VS France.

The Canadians never burned down the White House. Again, this was the British.
"British forces march on Washington. At a brief battle on the road, known as the Battle of Bladensburg; the British forces defeat the American forces, who withdraw in disarray, thus opening the road to Washington. The British burn the White House and the Capitol, but the rest of Washington is saved by a strong rain storm. The British, under orders not to hold any territory, withdrew."

Now, I know tempers have been flying recently. This is why I would like to say, as an American, I don't hate Canada in the slightest. In fact, I've visit before, and loved it. Hell, I'm even going back because it's such a nice place.
There is no offense intended for those of you who have been saying Canada burned the White House either, I'm simply trying to educate you.
This has been Boogiefevuh's lesson of the night. Take it. Absorb it. Love it.
...do whatever with it.

I would argue that It was infact Canadians that were doing the fighting for the Empire. Remeber Ontario and Quebec were called Upper and Lower Canada at the time.
Just because we werent officially a confederation yet doesnt obsolve Canada from being a part of the empire.
At the out break of the American Revolutionary War. Were the Rebels, American's or Insurgents? Who should be called the Patriots the ones Loyal to the Empire or the Insurgents?

I always it was retarded to say "OMG, w3 burn3t th3 fukin' Whi7e H0uz b4by!"
To those who keep brining that up:
First, this was the british.
Two, you weren't there.
Ahahahaha yeah I know, I had a canadian in my digital photo editing class last year and he loved to rant about how 'canada burned the white house.' Until the teacher made fun of him in front of the entire class and he ended up not showing up for the last four days of class due to humility.
We're neighbors, why can't we get along?

The people this was directed at have selectively chosen not to read it/not reply...or maybe they totally missed it. That's pretty depressing, I did homework for nothing.
And I'd just like to clarify, its a distinct minority of people from Canada who think this, I'm not pointing fingers at the general public.

I'm fine with the Americans.....
But am I the only one that finds it frustrating when people cite INTERNET sources?
(I'm NOT saying that what you say is wrong)
But Christ, anyone can develop a webpage and write any type any propoganda they like.
Let's try to cite scholarly journals.

A valid point, but nonetheless the many militias that were hastily assembled were almost completely made up of colonials from what was, at the time, Upper and Lower Canada. The only reason the British got through so many battles was because the Canadians were used as cannon fodder, thus sparing the British officers and soldiery. The defense of Quebec relied for the most part on French Canadian militias. In conclusion, Canadians still played a big part in the War of 1812. Until after WWII Canadians were repeatedly considered part of the British army and all credit was given to Great Britain and not Canada. Just wanted to clear that up, otherwise, a very clear and concise post.
