I spent the day lying in the cave by the river. I slept on and off until dusk. Having run as long and hard as I had the night before and then again this morning, the hunger began to set in. I was tempted to go in search of food but the danger and risk involved kept me from venturing out. I wondered how the others were faring, if Rachel was dead, as I'd earlier thought, and if I was going to make it through the remaining three days.
As night set in I decided I had to go for food. I hoped that by the cover of night I'd be able to stay out of the hunter's scope and be able to return to the safety of my riverside cave. I slipped out of the cave and down into the river and before I realized it was again being carried towards sea by the relentless flow of the river and as I was swept downstream it dawned on me that returning to the cave would not be easy. The only way I'd seen into this part of the river was to jump from above and to do so in the dark would be complete madness. Too late now, I'll just have to find a different place to whole up.
I drift down the river looking for a place to get out but both sides are sheer cliffs. As I float along the current I can hear the unmistakable sound of a waterfall. I don't remember there being a waterfall on the river but then again, I haven't followed its length either so maybe I just never saw it. Whatever the case may be I'm headed straight for it and don't care to go over if it can be helped. I frantically search the sides looking for any possible exit and still see nowhere I could make my escape, in desperation I grab on to the cliff wall and try to climb up the side but fighting the current pulling on my legs and my inability to see anything the dark I'm finally pulled back down into the river. The roaring, crashing noise of the waterfall is overwhelming now and I know that I'm going over just before it happens. I'm falling now for just a few seconds before hitting the water below me. Immediately the undertow of the waterfall tries to suck me under the falling water until I'm pushed behind the falls into another cavern. I look around and see that this cave goes back quite a bit further than the last one I was in. A small ledge at the opening of the cave allowed me to climb out of the water. I look behind me and see a vast sheet of water falling ever down unto itself, I look back into the cave and see that it's dry toward the back and as I survey my surroundings I see that it's possible to walk along the edge of the cave and out from behind the falls. I come out from behind the water and find myself on level ground. I quickly gather as much of the fruit that I can find nearby and turn back to the waterfall cave. Standing behind the falls again I considered the risks of staying here. I thought it was probably a good hiding place, not as good as the first one though, there I could see and hear if someone was approaching, here if someone was coming I'd have no idea until they were right there with me. All I could do was hope that the show's people hadn't found it and that I could stay hidden.
I slept through the remainder of the night and spent the next full day there, when night fell I again went out for food. I walked out from behind the falls and began to walk toward the coast looking for more fruit. I'd gone not more than twenty yards from the waterfall cave when I heard the rustle of the jungle undergrowth. I dropped to the ground, watching, waiting, and soon saw Tim and Randy emerge from the tree line. They were trying to move quickly and quietly but it looked like Randy was supporting Tim. I waited, I wanted badly to call out to them but some instinct in me told me to wait, and as I watched I saw the hunter almost casually stroll out from the trees. He put the rifle to his shoulder and fired twice, Randy and Tim went down before they'd even had a chance to realize the hunter had found them after all. The hunter walked up to his kills and checked to make sure he'd bit both men. He was a mere fifteen feet from me! I didn't move. I was afraid to move, afraid that any movement would give away my position. I watched, horrified, as the hunter pulled out a large knife and began sawing until finally he stood up holding the front teeth of his victims, holding them up in the little light the moon provided and looking at his souvenirs.
That was almost too much; I felt my gorge rise and swallowed as hard as I could. I felt the acid burning my throat as it returned to my stomach. And still I continued to watch the hunter. Seemingly satisfied with his new trophies he began to walk back into the woods. I breathed a sigh of relief but still held still. As though he heard the breath escaping from my mouth the hunter stopped and turned to look back. I swear I could see his eyes scouring the edge of the river, briefly passing over me before he turned again and continued back into the woods.
I stayed put, counting to five hundred. Then I pulled myself up, gathering the fruit I'd picked and walked over to Tim and Randy. They'd both been shot through the heart; Tim also appeared to have a gunshot wound to the leg. I put the fruit down and dragged their bodies to the river and again thinking of the waste of life, the incomparable disregard for these lives I bid them farewell and rolled them into the water, watching the current take hold of their bodies and drag them toward the sea.
I returned to the cave and put the fruit in one corner. I wasn't real hungry now. Two days left and as far as I know the hunter has killed three of us leaving Denny and myself. I silently hoped Denny was okay but you know what they say, wish in one hand, shit in the other and see which fills up first. I saw Denny on the morning of the last day and he was far from okay.

Even though I know Ben survives, I keep wondering when he will die.
That is a skill.

Ha, reading the reviews makes me happy because I don't have to wait for the next installment, woo to me finding good things very, very late.
And I don't know how you do it, but you wrote this extremely well. I swear I got nervous when Ben was watching the hunter, hoping he wouldn't get seen.
