I write this in the hope that, in the very likely event that we fail, future generations will know that we even existed. The harrowing events that led to this desperate attempt to save our people begun 58 years ago, in 2028. In 2004, the world's top terrorist, Osama bin Laden, was given a fatwa to nuke America. Some were terrified, most were apathetic. It was ludicrous that he could even make a nuclear weapon without being detected, let alone successfully fire it at us. The apathetic ones turned out to be right, but not in the way anyone, certainly not Osama himself, would have expected.
Beyond our wildest dreams, the lunatic acquired not only a nuclear warhead, but also a missile base in Pakistan to launch it from. How did that happen? No one knew for sure. An intelligence failure of epic proportions certainly took partial blame, but that alone was not enough. The other speculation was a massive cover-up by the hard-liner Islamic government, which took power after Musharraf fell to an assassination in 2012. We only discovered the extent of their treachery when a military force tried to stop the madness.
Intelligence finally came through a few weeks before the missile was set to launch. The confessions of a high ranking Al-Qaeda official we arrested, together with the mysterious disappearance of a top US nuclear scientist and his family, enabled the CIA to confirm the threat in mid-2028. A strike force was assembled and sent off within days while the entire nation was put under red alert for a nuclear assault.
In spite of the brutal hammering of Islamabad, aptly code-named "Shock and Awe 2", the Pakistani army and the remnants of Al-Qaeda fought alongside each other with a skill and tenacity far exceeding that exhibited by the Iraqi insurgents. They held back our troops despite being slaughtered by the thousands.
I was sitting in a one of five C-130s flying over Islamabad on the 3rd of June when there was a thundering roar in the ground below us, different and far more ominous than any anti-air fire. Seconds after the rumbling, a flash of steel shot past our planes before anyone of us registered what was happening. The Jumpmaster, who was preparing to give us the cue to execute the airborne storming of the missile base, slumped down and wearily stared at the plane's floor. The usually tough men around me tried to hold back their tears, some failing. It was only then that I realised the awful truth.
We were too late.
For the first time in our history, we were on DEFCON 1.

Oh, by the way, please don't quibble over military details like what the USA will really do in response to a potential attack or something. I'm neither in the military nor is such information readily available. It's strictly fiction with some borrowed facts, read it as such. Thanks again.
