The lab was, to Bob's surprise, very cozy. The circular level was sectioned off into four separate rooms, each with pastel colored walls. One pink room contained an EEG and several computers to analyze the information provided by the device, with dark hard wood flooring. Another green room contained a very large domed device, with the adjacent yellow room looking in for observation. The blue room that the elevator opened into and that Bob was now standing in contained an examination table in the center and counters, containing a microscope and other medical supplies, running along the distance of the curved outside wall. Despite the soft colored walls and the green shag carpet, this room felt the most uncomfortable for Bob.
"Take a seat." Dick directed, appearing beside Bob and Lucy in an 'all of a sudden' manner.
"So, what's the plan? Gonna hook me up to that EEG? Or how about that giant dome looking thing?" Bob asked while sitting down in one of the two plastic chairs beside the examination table.
"Those devices wouldn't be able to tell me anything I couldn't see for my self." Dick grabbed a chair and seated himself facing Bob. "I use those to aid Lucy in analyzing me, see if I've improved.. But since I'm doing the analyzing, I can do this my self." Dick leaned in and put his finger tips on Bob's temples.
Bob blocked Dick's hands, "Whoa, just remember.... Look, but don't touch!" he felt very vulnerable. Bob let his hands down and Dick preceded to close his eyes to concentrate.
Dick's breath picked up and his muscles tensed as his mind struggled to focus down to a cellular level. To Bob it felt like time had slowed to a crawl as he sat, awkwardly, waiting for Dick's diagnoses. It took an enormous amount of self control to keep himself from laughing at Dick's look of intense focus.
After some time Dick's eyes snapped open, he shook his head and looked at Bob with, what appeared to be, disbelief. Dick quickly shut his eyes and began to concentrate once more. At this display Bob started to tense and restrained himself from asking Dick what he saw.
After what seamed like hours, but in reality was only two minutes and thirty seven seconds, Dick opened his eyes. He leaned back into his chair with a look of exhaustion, and bewilderment. "Well, holy crap. You, my friend, are full of surprises." Dick said, exhaling the air from his lungs.
"What did you see? And if you show the slightest hint of being vague...." Bob trailed off giving Dick a very serious look.
"Alright," Dick took a brief moment to gather his thoughts. "Well you did hemorrhage a number of veins that supply blood and oxygen to your brain, but as far as the actual brain itself, there isn't any real damage." Dick paused for a moment. "The thing is, that about a third of your brain is completely inactive, it's not damaged or anything, it's just inactive. In fact, despite these neurons not carrying any signals, they're growing. They're not dividing or anything but the neurons themselves are developing hundreds of more connections with other neurons." Dick could tell Bob was struggling to keep up. "You see, most of the neurons in your brain have connections to about a thousand other neurons. For psychics that number goes up a couple hundred. For you, that number has nearly doubled itself, if not more. Also the structure of all your neurons, even nervous system, seam to be changing, allowing signals to transfer more easily from one cell to the next." Dick paused again, so that the next part would sink in. "Basically when those parts of your brain become active again, your brain signals are going to be moving twice as fast as any one else."
"What effect is that going to have on my abilities?" Bob asked, while his temporarily impaired mind attempted to recall the things he had learned about the structure of brain cells. His memory recalled a few words, Axon, dendrite, synapse.
"Well you'll definitely be more focused. Your abilities will come more natural to you than they do now. You know, no more tightening your muscles and all that heavy breathing." Dick said with a smirk. "You'll probably be able to focus down to a cellular level a whole hell of a lot easier than before." Dick got up to stretch his legs and get a drink of water from the sink along the far wall. "You are probably one of the luckiest guys in the world. Did you know that?" Dick didn't wait for a response. "First, your psychic. This alone is a feat that takes astronomical odds. You have to be willing to believe in psychic abilities, then you have to have the free time and the will to pursue acquiring said psychic abilities." Dick took a gulp of water from his glass and began walking into the yellow observation room, motioning for Bob and Lucy to follow. "Then, even then you might not actually become psychic. I know it's nice to believe that every body has the potential for psychic ability, but in reality only seventy percent of the human population has the right genetic make up." After all three had filed into the room, Dick illuminated a large screen that showed a single celled organism in black and white.
After staring at the image for a while, Bob half heartedly spoke. "I guess I'm just lucky like that."
