I was living in Memphis Tenn.
(And since I grew up in rural Indiana) I have always been a hunter, mostly rabbits, squirrels, pheasants small game etc.
I had always wanted to go deer hunting. Many of the people that I worked with had been last year and all of them had gotten a deer or two.
Moreover, I was sick of being "left out"
Therefore, I go down to the gun store and by a black powder rifle. (A Thompson 45 cal. Black powder) and it was a beautiful thing.
It took me a few days to learn how to shoot it, how much powder (85 grains of pyro dex)
What was the best round to fire, there were a lot to choose from
Round ball with patch, cone shaped Thompson special round. Or the "pre waxed buffalo"
I settled for the latter and set about improving my aim and skills reloading.
After a week or so, I could hit a coke can at 80 yards. And I though "Good enough"
Out to the woods I go, equipped the all the gear and proper licenses.
My tags said that I could take a Buck and a doe with my black powder rifle and by god; I was going to fill them.
I had put up a tree stand during squirrel season so I knew that I had a great spot.
However not even 100 yards from my truck was a monster Buck!
I counted ten points (that's the number of tines on his rack (Horns) and stopped counting)
I loaded my rifle quickly, aimed and fired.
A second after the smoke cleared. I saw that he fell; yet he had gotten back up but he did not run far.
He stopped and looked back, not at me but something else.
I took the opportunity to reload, close some distance and this time I used a tree stump to steady my shot... Bang!
This time I know I had a solid hit. This time he went down.
Yet, he was able to raise his head and again he looked back
Now I was curious and I looked the same direction that the buck was.
To my surprise out of the grass not far from were I had shot him (a doe got to her feet.)
Therefore, I reloaded. Wow two deer's in a day what luck.
However, I saw that she was not running either an arrow from a bow hunter was easily seen sticking from her stomach.
Now you might think what I did then was cruel. However I shot her also
To die from an arrow wound is an awful thing, so I killed them both.
I also realize that the Buck was guarding her and he must have known that she was hurt.
This was the end of the rut and after deer's mate the buck usually runs off and finds another doe
Nevertheless, this guy chose to stay with the doe. Even tried to lead me away from her.
The buck was a real beautiful animal. 12 points! More than I had thought.
I tagged them and cleaned them.
I got a lot of meat and shared with my friends.
However, I never fired the gun again. Or went deer hunting ever again.
TRUE.

Writing could use some work. You should go back to hunting. Deer overpopulation is destroying our ecosystem. Too many damned hippies trying to protect them, and they don't realize how harmful overpopulation is.

I can relate a little to this. I use to hunt with my old man before I went to college, but I could never pull myself to shoot anything. I just enjoyed watching the wildlife.
On the otherhand, the sport of hunting is on the decline. There are fewer, much fewer, hunters today than before. I don't know why people have this image that there is a plethora of hunters. You tend to see a large aggregation of them at state lands because many of them don't own large enough properties to hunt on or get the permission to do so.

Real men hunt only with a bow. I know people who will go out with a 30-06 scoped to the hilt with jacketed bullets. 100+ yards one shot one kill, kinda takes the fun out of it, and the skill

meh, the writing sucked, but I guess you learned compassion. by the way, compassion is totally worthless in the real world, just like a black powder rifle.
I would not say that compassion is totally worthless. Knowing that the assholes who I occasionally have to deal with, have all sorts of psychological and physical ailments that cause them to be bad tempered and screw their lives up with their insanity and having compassion for them helps me daily in dealing with them.
If I did not have compassion, I would mentally shred them and punch them in the throat, which does not help anybody.

There are too many hunters nowadays. On the first day of deer season, the highway along the state gamelands in my area was bumper to bumper for three miles. How safe could it possibly be with a few hundred people waiting up in treestands with loaded rifles waiting to shoot at the first thing that moves?
Is your rifle for sale?

Noble story.
On a more serious note, this is why I stopped hunting people, too. You wouldn't believe how possessive men are until their significant other has an arrow wound. I'll never forget the look in either of their eyes.
