The Jumpmaster got up. Marching back to the door, he pressed the button to open the hatch.
"Go! Go! Go!" He yelled, a command we heard many times before, but there was a grief and fury not present in the previous occasions. It was clear enough what he meant: Get the bastards.
The battle to protect our land was now one of revenge.
The resistance continued to be shockingly strong for weeks after the missile launch, especially since their task was completed. Our rage for vengeance found a match in their extremist fervour. It was only when we finally captured the deserted missile silo almost a month later, did we realise why they did not melt away. They were willing to sacrifice their lives to cover their leader's escape.
In the control room, we also found the answer to the question that had been plaguing Washington for weeks: Why the missile had struck Shanghai.
If we did not have confidence in our chances of stopping the nuke, the people living in the Chinese commercial hub that fateful day never stood a chance. 23.15 million lives were lost in that single moment, not to mention devastation to the Chinese economy.
In his final act of patriotism, Dr Willsmith, the nuclear scientist, changed the co-ordinates for the launch. We could only speculate that the Al-Qaeda operatives realised what he was up to, and left him no time to make sure the new co-ordinates were aimed at a safe place. He paid a heavy price. The tortured and mutilated bodies of him and his wife ensured a close-casket funeral for both. Their son's corpse might have been intact enough for an open coffin, had his spinal cord not ripped out when we unhooked him from the wall.
The terrorists did try to save themselves from China's wrath by issuing a statement on their website that it was "a grand conspiracy by the infidels to harm China." and that they would "support China against the Zionist supporters in all ways possible, Allah willing."
If anything, this vain attempt only served to outrage the Chinese more. Even without conscription, their size of their army swelled as Chinese youth countrywide were swept up in nationalist passion. Where their attitude towards the war on terror had been lukewarm at best before, the Chinese Communist Party soon declared a People's War on Terrorism.
As the events that unfolded in the following months would show, in trying to deal us a mortal blow, the terrorists were in fact on death row the moment Shanghai went up in a mushroom cloud.
