I already knew the answer. Pontiff is a term given to the pagan high priest of antiquity. Adopted by the "christian" church, and used as a political device (reflecting the ideals of those ancients). And also makes me laugh allot.

It originates from ancient Greek 'o pappas, meaning father.
It became Papa in Latin, and thus into Middle English.
