NECROSIAC 26

The room filled with the scream of air split by steel, followed immediately by a loud snap as Adrian's world tumbled out of control.

Suddenly he felt the side of his head painfully connect with the dark hard wood floor and realized that the shoe he was staring at was his own. He tilted his horrified eyes up and to the side, in time to watch his robe covered, decapitated body, stumble twice sideways then crumble to its knees and fall motionless beside him.

From somewhere above he heard a woman exclaim "Yes!" followed by a cautious reply from the man who called himself Mute.

"Be still. It's not over yet"

Even before Mute's words were out of his mouth, Adrian felt the beast within him roar to life from where it slept in his mind, and reach out from him, willing his body back together.

"Grab it!"

His vision skewed again as cold hands wrapped around his head, stopped it from sliding across the floor and lifted it, long nails digging deeply and painfully into his forehead and temples.

"Stop it!"

Adrian looked down and watched as his body began to slide across the floor towards him, only to be pinned to it, as Mute drove the long thick blade in his hand through its center. He opened his mouth to scream at the man but could only move his lips soundlessly.

"I can't hold it!"

With a condescending frown, the big man crossed the short space between them and took Adrian's head from the woman, holding it firmly in one hand by the hair.

Suddenly Adrian's vision was filled with the round bulging contours of Mute's face.

"This is a god?" he spat "I think not.

Adrian closed his eyes and willed the beast to have its way with them, to rip the souls from them as it had done so many times earlier. He could feel its desire to do so but its cries of frustrated rage told him it could not, and all at once he understood his situation.

The beast could only feast on the living. It had no power over the souls of the undead.

Adrian turned inward once again and sent his own power forth to command the flesh of his murderers but once again failed. Somehow he understood that in time, he would be powerful enough to do so, but he was not yet at his peak. Given time he could do as he wished with the dead and living alike but not yet. For the first time since he could remember, he felt himself cloaked in fear as he realized the two Necromancers standing before his swinging vision were beyond his control.

"Not a god!" hissed the woman "An abomination! Like the thing between its legs! Impure! Dead flesh desecrated with metal!"

He could feel the beast raging across the large room, back and forth from ceiling to floor, furious and insane and completely helpless.

"Calm yourself Madeline. Have your men take the body to the basement. Tell them to give it to the boy who runs the machine. Tell the boy that Mute commands he grind it but not to eat from it. Tell them to burn what the machine spits out"

Adrian watched the woman frown and disappear from his vision. Once again he turned inward, screaming at the beast to do something... ANYTHING while he searched himself for some bit of power to wield. One by one he tried to tap the talents he'd stolen but the man was too powerful to be touched by the Seer within him and his other talents were still in their infancy. Desperately he turned back to his natural abilities but he found himself too drained from the day's adventures. Without the ability to chant he lacked the strength to muster enough of himself to put up a defense let alone strike back.

He opened his eyes wide and, despite his missing lungs, opened his mouth to plead for his life, to offer whatever he could to soften the murderous intent in the big man's greasy face.

The screaming of the beast within his mind suddenly stopped and Adrian despaired as he felt its presence within him go limp. He realized he'd lost the fight. The Beast had given up, and he knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that any hope he might have of surviving had gone with it.

"I killed your father" said Mute dispassionately "It wasn't I who ripped the soul from his body, but understand, it was because of me he ended. I'm afraid I've developed a rather succinct taste for ending the lives of the family Penance. Once I'm done with you, I will see to the end of your sister as well. I want you to know this as you fall to whatever hell that's prepared for you. Tell your father that Mute sends his regards. Tell him the family will be reunited shortly"

Adrian tried to spit in Mutes face but the best he could do without air was send a trail of slime to dribble down his trembling chin.

Mute chuckled and send his black tongue out to lick the fluid off before it fell to the floor. He set Adrian's head almost gently down at his feet, taking care to place the head on its back so Adrian could see him towering above.

Slowly, he brought one broad, leather soled foot above Adrian's head.

"I give you this one chance boy" He said "One simple question to prolong your pathetic existence. Tell me, what do you see?"

Immediately, Adrian mouthed the first word to come to his terrified mind.

"Boot"

Mute chuckled and shook his head "You see? That's the difference between you and me boy... between a charlatan and a harbinger... You see a boot, but it's not a boot. It's the end of you!"

Mute brought his foot down hard. Once... twice... and a final third then stood back and admired the mess he'd made on the floor.

After a moment he turned to where Madeline stood smiling with her men at the door to the room and bowed deeply.

"Do as I asked my dear" he said warmly "Then tell me what you've found out about the sister. I'm done practicing. It's time to end her and the Pentate once and for all"

Awesome.
I smiled when I thought of the boy who runs the machine. We all know that he doesn't think highly of Mute so I'm thinking Adrian's body is going to make a very tasty snack.

Thanks all.

And an extra thanks to those of you who threw my name out on Lojope's post. That was a pleasant surprise.

I have been trying to get two of these out a week but my personal life has been kind of out of control as of late.

Funny how crazy monkey sex interfers with the writing process.

Very nice.

I read the whole series a couple days ago, didn't get any work done.

Eventually I'll go back and rate accordingly, but for now just know that it's been read and it's brilliant.

the end

Lenny: Yeah, he got injured on the job and they sent him home with

Homer: Stupidity, eh?
