Nirvana (I don't even know, nor do I care, how to spell it) sucks. They're sound is uninspired, boring, monotonous and just plain bad. I love rock, but more like SOAD and The Used, and ocasionally Goldfinger. These band's music is good because it has some action (I guess that's what it could be called, I'm looking for a word that means the song moves a little). Nirvana is just boring.

So....

Nirvana sucks, discuss

This Band sucks ass plain and simple, they couldn't even hold a candle to classics like black sabbath & led zeppelin.

Out of the big seattle 4 (Alice in chains, pearl jam, soundgarden, nirvana)

Nirvana is the worst, they make grunge into a bad name and gave rock a downfall.

Nirvana is revolutionary alright.

To Shitty bands like Greenplay, korn, taproot and especially limp shithouse and the rest of the mtv no talented bands.

Nirvana has not aged that well. When they started out their music was new, emotional, and powerful in a way that had not been done before. Now so many bands have copied their basic style, that Nirvana's music sounds the same as a lot of other stuff that is out there. To me they are a classic but I can see to people who did not grow up with them why they think they are nothing special.

Nirvana is the most overrated mediocre excuse of a rock band in history, they didn't change rock for the better....

This reminds me of something Jim Morrison once said about Led Zeppelin- they were the death of rock & roll.

Nirvana is the most overrated mediocre excuse of a rock band in history, they didn't change rock for the better, they changed it for the worst and because of that they created the most idiotic genre in rock called nu metal and other garbages.

not to mention destroyed a great band (Metallica)

Nirvana is one of the best bands of the past 25 years. Yes, I know sometimes they may be repetitive, and that some of their fans are idiots, but Nirvana is a good band, dammit. Nevermind was good, but out of the twelve only three songs were good ("Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Come As You Are", and "Lithium"), but on their next album, In Utero, nearly every song had HUGE potential. My favorite songs by them are the rare post-1993 compositions, of which only a few are known to exist.

My personal favorites are "All Apologies", "Heart-Shaped Box", the live version of "Lithium", and "Do Re Mi", an unreleased solo acoustic track that is the last Cobain composition known to exist, recorded in his basement on March 25, 1994 (a few days before his death).

As for his death, I'm not sure whether he killed himself or if Courtney killed him or whatever. All I know is that on that day, we lost a great musician.

In short, FUCK YOU.

Yeah everyone agrees that Nirvana sucks...except for the fact that Nevermind is considered one of the most influential rock albums of all time... Because obviously, great rock albums are FULL of boring, terrible songs. You're a worthless, sub-human fuck. If it wasn't for Nirvana, bands like the Used never would have formed. We would all still be listening to hair metal.

Fuck u, anyone who even thinks nirvana is below their standards is just full of shit. You obviously can't see good music when u hear it. I no sum people have already mentioned this but kurts being fuckin dead for 10 years, writing and playing music isn't exactly the easiest thing in the world to do so give the guy sum credit! Fuck id like to see you write songs and strum them on the guitar and then watch the world worship them. What was the point of this fuckin payout session of nirvana/Kurt cobain anyway, don't u people have anything better to do then bag the fuckin greatest band ever. Kurt Cobain lived his life and made it one to remember. Which is just shit to see u guys giving him fuck all, he, they were geniuses pure geniuses. They were the only ones who broke the shit that came out of the 80's and showed the 90's what they were made of. They sang what they liked wore what they liked and acted how they wanted and if u fuck heads cant handle that then maybe u should fuck off and next time u hear a band that u don't like don't go and post your shit ass opinion on the fuckin internet. You wanna hate nirvana then do so but think of all the other fuckin shit bands there are that are worse, good charlotte, blink 182, system of a down, etc. at least sum people who actually have good taste in music and no what music is and don't like those group of fuckheads bands and actually like Nirvana, who rocked lived, died and began the new decade of rock for the 90's. Nirvana dominated the 90's and theres no denying it, prove me wrong by naming a better band. With out them where do u think rock would be now. What's a world with rap, pop, punk-pop and all the rest of shit music u guys are into? Nirvana were fuckin awesome, learn it, no it, live it. And if any of u bitches wanna argue with that then fuck off and go and listen to ur 'rap' music. KURT COBAIN DIED FOR YOU!

Did Nirvana suck? I would say no, but neither would I say they were geniuses.

They were the exact perfect band to come along at that exact time. Pop music was dead, hip-hop dominated music, and the remaining rock bands had become so pussified that any normal man wanted to kick the ass of every fairy on stage with long hair, makeup and spandex. There was such a yearning and pent-up demand for what Nirvana happened to be doing at the time that they just exploded.

In the context of their times, they were relevant. Are they as relevant today? Probably not.

I own Teen Spirit or whatever that album's called, and in utero. i've listened to most of the songs not on those albums

now I used to be a big fan. then I started playing guitar and shredding, and I kind of outgrew it. in all honesty, how they affected new rock or grunge doesn't really matter. what we're talking about is talent.

they lacked it. you can blame that opinion on ignorance but compared to the bands I listen to now (children of bodom, dark tranquility, etc) they couldn't stand toe to toe in a million years.

i think a band that isn't technically good (as evidently they weren't.) can make up for it with soul and passion in their playing. but come on, nirvana? the lyrics were mostly nonsense and the playing was juvenile. the only thing good i can see of kurt cobain's influences was that he listened to celtic frost. course, you sure as fuck won't hear any of that in his music.

summed up in one word, nirvana is...
"mediocre"

Nirvana, It means
nir·va·na
(nîr-vän, nr-)
n.
often Nirvana
Buddhism. The ineffable ultimate in which one has attained disinterested wisdom and compassion.

This is no way makes sense when its used as the title for the most over hyped and talentless band of all time. If there was no Nirvana, there would be no Rage or SOAD or any of that crap, thats why they suck, they made a revolution of stupid angst filled loser music. I honeslty almost threw up after hearing "You Know You're Right". I think Kurt had a hidden message in the title for that song, I know I AM right for hating Nirvana, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" sounds like the reverse chords of the terrible "Rape me". If anyone likes Nirvana they should suffer the same fate as Kurt Cocaine. And I'll be glad to administer it

Nirvana was a good band because they were the forerunners of a musical revolution. Cobain has said before that he was heavily influenced by bands like the Pixies, but the average public wasn't ready for a band like that (and never really was). Thus, Nirvana was the band that the public put on a pedestal as the frontrunners of a movement. Nirvana accepted the role and made some pretty good songs in my opinion. They led a musical revolution and that is why they are a great band.

OK, maybe the reason you think Nirvana sucked is because you never really listened to them, and
your only saying bad things about Nirvana and/or Kurt because he isn't here to stick up for
himself. But he has his fans, i am one of them. I'm sure that even if he was here he wouldn't
bother with a piece of shit like you anyways. Their music including singing, lyrics, instrumental
everything was great, I don't know how you can't see that. Oh yeah and he DIDN'T kill himself

and for all you ppl saying show some respect, fuck off. he was a drugged out junky who killed himself. no honor in that. i piss on his grave and show no respect, the fuck deserved to die and were all better off without him. and if courtney did kill him, then i salute her.

than one song thats retarded actually listen to the songs before u make ur biased
opinion and not some stupid how technical it is means how good it is or
a guy playing a fucking solo hey i can play an arpeggio like malmsteen but u know
who my greatest influence is that blonde haired fuck cuz he was a songwriter
all u people that think schredders are better than songwriters are fucking retarded
thats like saying uniforms for an army are more importand than soldiers i mean
dont get me wrong i love solos my favorite guitar player is hendrix but even
hendrix is overlooked for his songwriting abilities he was an amazing songwriter
but im sure ud listen to 1 song and say this sucks this is old, listen to one rainy wish
thats songwriting thats what Cobain could do and regardless of all ur insecure or
uneducated fucking guess bullshit and calling him a junky and overlooking him i dont care
even bob fucking dylan heard polly and said he had heart BOB DYLAN what are you gonna
say dylan sucks now? tell that to the used and soad u fucking teeny bop trendy wanker
and fuck you people that just like lithium come as you are smells like teen spirit
and in bloom those are all great songs but how many of you have heard sappy? or
spank thru? or breed? listen to nirvana cuz u like them not just because u wanna feel
secure in a group or some shit and dont dislike them jus cuz people listen to them
out of security and soad rock thats like saying bob seger and keith richards rock but chuck berry blows
just like people going up to zakk wylde and going man randy rhoads sucks ur the man
hed prolly punch u in the face
i cant even believe someone would say nirvana sucks but the used rock
be glad nirvana existed then u can listen to soad and the used fuck sounding like
an orchestra fuck sounding raw what really matters is heart kurt had that
jimi hendrix had that beethoven had that theres too much emotionless shit music today
just like the 80s u got glam rap and pop rock thats why all these kids listen to
zep and sabbath and floyd cuz then there was heart and not as much image when the
fuck do u hear a song like all along the watchtower or snowblind today?
even not having heart is fine but music should make u feel something
warmth upset stomach sorrow energy w.e u want but just noise i dont care too much for
cuz thats not music Cobain had been dead for 10 yrs show some respect and before
u call him a worthless trash junky look in the mirror at urself let the one of u thats
perfect throw the first stone

Totally agree.

I've got to hand it them, they were fairly together as a band, and they all had their moments of talent, and at least one of them was fairly good. However, all of that is pointless becuase Kurt Cobain was the band. I don't give a shit how you argue against that point, you're wrong. His guitar playing was terrible at best, his riffs were repetative (not just in the song which was bad enough, but from song to song as well), and his influence ruined a generation of wannabe guitar players. His lyrics were pretty good (even though I personally didn't care for them), but with that aside, there is not much more to the band. What really steams me about Nirvana is that they are given mass-media credit for changing music and starting a new genre, and in the process, convicing the brainwashed public that what they produced was music.

Wait... I left off one great thing about their CD (I did buy the first one)... It still makes a great coaster for my beer.

Opinions vary, if you don't like Nirvana.. don't listen to them, It's not like you are changing people's opinions by talking about "how much they suck"

It's not like.. "Hey, HE'S RIGHT! WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING?!?!? I'm gald someone finally told me the truth about how this band really does suck.."

any fans of Grohl who hate Nirvana.. that's jsut stupid. I mean, Dave Grohl was in the band too.. he didn't have to play with the band, he must have liked the music in order to play with the band for 3 albums and multiple tours.. Plus, without Nirvana, Dave Grohl wouldn't be famous

Someone also said that all the songs are the same.. well, if you compare Bleach to Nevermind.. I think that you'd realize there's a major difference in style there. Compare the song, "About a Girl" to "School," and those are both on the same album.

to the street punker, check out an album called "Smells Like Bleach" on amazon.com

someone compared pearl jam, blink 182, and creed to nirvana..
wow, as if those band were alike, at all

Nirvana's music.. It's pop-punk music, But it a good way. Catchy harmonies and Melodies. but Very punk influenced at the same time.

You sir, are a moron.

Kurt Cobain wasn't a guitar god, but he was good songwriter. Plus, you have Dave Grohl, who is the shit (Foo Fighters and sit in drummer for QOTSA). The Used are trendy and annoying, and Goldfinger is just the whiny, three-chord, punk rock. System of a down are good, but I'm guessing you only listen to them because your friends do.

Plus, without Nirvana, what would songs would beginner guitar players learn?

Nirvana is shit.

They couldn't play instruments worth a crap, the lyrics were trite, pseudo-depressive, and angsty, and they influenced the shitty shit shit bands that constitute today's 'rock' scene. Fuck System of a Down. Those fucking pretentious assgoblins can't play for shit. The Used? More pop-punk-emo pansies who get tons of piercings because it's cool to look like you got shrapnelled in the face? They're on a lower talent level than the novelty calendar on my desk. Shit, February just played a diminished arpeggio, thereby owning 99% of MTV bands.

Nirvana sucks. Case closed.

The 90s was the shittiest decade for music in recent history. All bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Creed, Blink182, etc. suck toilet dung.

The best music came from the 80s. Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Dream Theater. For starters.

Streetpunk's got a point with the whole "Nirvana's music is simple"...yeah. Smells LIke Teen Spirit is power chords, over and over. But you know what? It still rocks. I can be anywhere and just put that in and start rocking. That's the key to great music. I can hear a Nirvana song come on the radio or in a music store or in wherever and just suddenly start "rocking". That's a great band.

IMO Nirvana is just another footnote in the "lived hard - died young" book. If Cobain hadn't punked out and the band had continued on, we wouldn't even devote the space on this site to them now. They were then and certainly are now out-classed in that genre. Their music attracted similar youths who felt dis-enfranchized or just plain angry. What the fuck is new about that?

Neil Young, the purported grandfather of grunge, would have encouraged just as many grunge bands.

Complaint Rock is nothing new, in fact, isn't song lyric history chock full of folks just writing about beasts or burden? Other than God and Love, isn't it all about comparing lifes troubles? Any group of people can identify with some suffering.

The grunge look, and others before them, is just another fashion caused by a group of people commiserating with the words and emulating the band.

I am ashamed to admit that in my early teens I tried very hard to look like any of the Go Go's. I knew that only MY generation 'got the beat'. If Belinda Carlisle had (God forbid) dies tragically after that first album, we may all put the Go Go's higher on the great bands list. But what did they or their music style really do? Inspire Madonna? Shudder!

Nirvana was shitty, plain and simple. Kurt could not sing and Nirvana guitar tab is taught to begininng guitarists. Dave Grohl proved that he could play drums in Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stonage, but not in Nirvana. He played simple beats(probably so he didn't confuse Kurts heroin soaked mind)and the same goes for Krist Novoselic. He didn't ever play anything that I couldn't play with my toes on the bass.
I am not saying that complex instrumentation makes for a good band, because I like punk rock(although some punk can be fairly complex, check out Rancid or Nofx)but Nirvana was just lazy with their writing.Nirvana didn't have enough energy to be punk and they didn't have enough innovation to be rock. They were not original, they just happened to be promoted by the right people at the right time. Soundgarden, Meat Puppets, MudHoney, the Pixies, Janes Addiction, and the Posies were all older than Nirvana, and all influenced Nirvana greatly. If it weren't for them, we wouldn't have Nirvana, so what's anyones point by bringing up the spectrum of influence Nirvana had?
As far as Krist goes, check out eyes adrift (guitarist for meat puppets and drummer for sublime)
SOAD is awesome speed. I don't think they are amatuers, they like to do things differently, that is why they use slow blast beats. They don't want to be a typical hardcore. That is why I appreciate them. Experimentation. That is , imo, the key to great music. I loved Nirvana when I was a young'n but I grew up and realized that they really didn't offer anything. Pearl Jam on the other hand was definitely not grunge, because they were all too good at their instruments, LOL. Actually, they covered a huge selection of genres, theoretically speaking, including jazz, funk, metal, and country, all within rock stylings. That is far morethan any grunge band ever accomplished.
I have one thing to say to the writer of this article.....don't back off when they insult punk. If you like it, say you do. Don't cop out by saying"it's not that bad" say...."it fucking rules!!!!!".....but only if you like it.
Well, there is my rant. I can discuss my disgust for Nirvana all day, but no one would really agree with me because I am a psycho who runs with the motha-fuckin hatchet.

Gotta agree with hidden here, Nirvana's music was no watershed event. No way can you compare a (literal) no-brainer like Kurdbrain with Hendrix, Joplin. Some people were influnced by their music but in 5-6 years they'll be where Gary glitter'd be if he had the nerve to kill himself instead of molesting asian children. Teen angst gets old fast & a musical style based on teen angst cannot survive the angst for long. Since their "style" didn't have much to offer as far as musical inventiveness is concerned, it will die out soon. The only exception to this rule that I'm aware of is punk which, having been started as a means of marketing clothes, is immune to the total lack of musical skill. It was the sex pistols themselves who described punk as "a sort of yelling in key".

Darth, Nirvana is still being 'over'hyped, they released Kurts journal recently and after a long court battle with Courtney Love, Grohl and Novoselic agreed to You Know You're Right being released on a compilation album of 'classics' last year which was just entitled 'Nirvana'...this year or next they are bringing out more Nirvana tracks on a new album but Grohl and Novoselic have selected, rarer, less heard tunes for it.

Nirvana aren't going out of the news or the public conscience for the time being, and I'd wager not for a long, long time. Kurbain has immortalised himself in the same way as Hendrix, Morrison, Joplin or any other famous artist dying young.

Marketing is what sells albums. There are some great bands out there which do not sell at K-mart or Walmart. Then there are the Brittney spears/lopez twins which sell a shitload of worthless albums. Income is no measure of talent. Album sales are no measure of talent. oscars, grammys or mtv awards are NO MEASURE of talent. If they were, then N'sync, boys2men, robbie williams or scooter could qualify and they are, all of them, worthless wnakers. Subjectively speaking, of course.

Do you really need to backup up opinions with evidence? If you do, then the opinions are evidence themselves - I opine that Nirvana was a band of adolescent talentless jackoffs in timberlands. I opine that curt cocaine was a no talent bum with no voice control & no self control. They sounded like shit, even with all the magic of post production & live they sounded even worse. A pathethic band of talentless wankers lead by a suicidal lumberjack wanna-bee. Oh, they were ugly too.
If you measure talent by money, success or popularity then I'll bet you think N'sync or Backdoor Boys are better - after all they've made way more money & have more fans than Nirvana....but I'm betting you're not going to take that route 'cause what with your taste in music, you probably consider yourself trendily alienated too.

Pound for pound, the BeeGees had more impact on modern music than that looser & they sucked too. Name a single contribution to today's music that was introduced by Cobain - I dare ya - Unshaved loosers in plaid shirts & timberlands with no voice? George Michael. Uninspired lyrics capitalizing on alienated geeks with no future? been done to death by everyone since Jerry lee lewis' "great balls of fire". Suicide by shotgun decapitation? 5. If Cobain's songs were so emotional, what the hell happened. Was he so full of emotion that he decided to paint the walls a new color? I don't think so.

Nirvana does suck. Cobain was a no talent bum & now he's a headles corpse of a no talent bum. This is all very subjective, but when I listened to this music ( especially the "mtv unplugged parody of himself") I understood why he killed himself - he realized that all he was ever going to be is a talentless bum singing to a generation of loosers whose most inspiring experience was the realisation that they stand for nothing, know nothing & care for nothing. Hollow, purposeless existance for children brought up on a mind numbing diet of nintendo, ritalin, zoloft, sugar frosted sugar smacks & fucking hanna barbara cartoons. He should have been a serial killer or a mass murderer - I'd have had more respect for that - but he chose the cowards way out. His girlfriend ? a whore who capitalised on his death. His band? nobodies. His music? eminently forgetable. At least he did have the nuts to blow his head off, unlike some folks who will continue to seep poison into our collective subconscious mind untill, in due time, they become living plastic replicas of themselves like Tom Jones, Little richard or michael jackson. I say kill them now & get the torture over with.
