To thousands of metal fans everywhere such as myself, Dimebag Darrell, formerly of Pantera, was the greatest guitarist ever to live. He was born in 1966 as Darrell Abbott and was exposed to music his whole life as his father owned a recording studio in Texas. At the age of 16 he entered a guitar playing contest and won, and later went on to form the band Pantera with his brother Vinnie on drums and his friend Rex Brown on bass in 1983. At first Pantera played a sort of hard rock power metal type of music, but the music got much much heavier when vocalist Phil Anselmo later joined.
The first real album they put out was called "Cowboys from Hell" and set a standard of heavy riffs, wild solo guitar work, and complete balls out agression that Pantera would come to be known for. In 1992 they released their second album, called "Vulgar Display of Power", which, as a surprise to critics and metalheads alike, topped the charts. Later came "Far Beyond Driven" in 1994 and after that "The Great Souther Trendkill" in 1996. The last album they made was "Reinventing the Steel" which was released in 2000. "The Great Souther Trendkill" and "Reinventing the Steel" are in my opinion the two best albums they put out.
Wednesday night in a nightclub in Ohio known for the heavy metal concerts it often served as a venue for, Dimebag's band, Damageplan, was setting up to play a concert. Damageplan is far inferior to Pantera in every way, nevertheless, around 250 people showed up. Right as Dime started to walk on stage, a heavyset bald guy, 25 year old Nathan Gale, ran out from the crowd with a gun drawn and shot Dime 5 or 6 times. He then turned his gun on the crowd and fired some more, killing a few people. James Niggemeyer, a policeman, got the call about the shooting on his radio and raced over to the nightclub. He walked in with his shotgun at the ready and saw Gale with a hostage in a headlock and took aim. The hostage managed to squirm out of the way and Niggemeyer fired, killing Gale.
Personally, I don't know why the hell someone would want to shoot Dime. He was a great guitarist, wasn't caught up in drugs, and was above all the bullshit that the music industry seems to be so full of. Dime wasn't responsible for the breakup of Pantera, that was Phil Anselmo's fault, so if the shooter's motive had something to do with grief about the breakup of Pantera, he should've shot Anselmo. All I know is that Dimebag Darrell kicked ass at guitar, and with him gone, the world is now slightly worse than it was before.
R.I.P Dimebag Darrell.

Why people think this site is for remembrance is beyond me.

It pisses me off that on the local news, they just report "band members were killed". Didn't even give him name recognition.

Blame it on good old Ohio. We just passed a law recently allowing people to carry concealed weapons. Good tribute

RIP Dime;
The original Groove-Riff-Monger.
Unbelieveably hurting that he's gone.
Just played DamagePlan a couple months ago in Vancouver. The guy was the shit.
CR straight up.

Explain to me, how after all the terroist crap in the states... how in the bloody hell did a guy manage to get a gun into a concert, oh and on top of that... HOW THE FUCKING HELL, did he get up on stage? Lax secutiry anyone?
(also, "and three other people before a police officer shot him to death")
Shot him to death, is it just me or does that sentence sound unbelievably stupid as fuck
