It was 1995. I walked into the classroom and there she was laughing and gossiping with her friends. I arrived late that day and sat down in the first empty chair I could find. Little did I know my seating choice would change everything for the next four years and give me the opportunity to befriend one of the most amazing girls I've ever known.
During the first few weeks I sat there quietly and listened to her talk about secret crushes and who's dating who. I knew of most the people she was talking about but not personally. You see, she was part of a different crowd than I ran with. The popular kids. The highschool elite. I was just a class clown barely making my way through the hallways and disrupting class whenever it warranted a laugh or two. My outbursts were all there was to me as far as my classmates were concerned. I was the guy who made even the most boring class tolerable but you still thought was weird. Let's just say I wasn't getting invited to any killer parties back then. It was a delicate balance of aristocrats and peasants. I knew my place.
She was the head cheerleader with beautiful long brown hair, gorgeous eyes and a suprisingly good sense of humor. (She got my jokes.) The first few weeks of sitting next to her I was speechless. Which reminds me that writing this is like looking at embarassing old photographs of myself and cringing. I almost can remember how awkward I felt. I doubt at this point she even knew I existed other than the guy taking up space in the chair next to her.
One day I was in a particularly bad mood because I had spilled my lunch tray on my shirt and I had to walk around like some kind of outcast with chocolate milk smears and ketchup blobs on my shirt. I went to the bathroom to wash it out which only made it worse. I just didn't give a fuck after that. I sat down as usual next to her and prepared to take notes for Biology. Unfortunately, Mrs. Bounds the bane of my existence had to point out to everyone in the class who hadn't noticed that I decided to "wear my lunch" instead of eating it that day. Everyone had a chuckle at my expense. Cunt. Little did you know I would have the last laugh you old decrepit bitch.
You see, Mrs. Bounds was eighty freaking years old and was just two years shy of retiring for good this time. She actually came out of her first retirement to teach again! Not this time. As luck would have it she got called out of the classroom by another teacher and so while she was out I took her water bottle she used for the overhead projecter and dumped its contents into her chair. No one said a word as she made a beeline stright for it and sat in the puddle. Strangely enough she didn't notice and when she stood up to write on the chalkboard it looked like she had pissed herself which made the class burst with laughter. She couldn't figure it out.
Then the fucking good samaritan girl came up and whispered in her ear what had happened. She left the classroom the principal came for me shortly after. As I got up from my seat I looked back at her and caught her smiling. I was suspended for a week.
The next week I sat down ready for business as usual when I was greeted by an extended hand. "That was pretty funny last week. We all hate her. Oh sorry, my name is Leslie."
"Nice to meet you" I sheepishly said.
The next few weeks would see us grow closer and closer as I became more sarcastic and daring than ever. Suddenly, everyone took note of who I was. I imagined being described as "The funny guy who's friends with Leslie. You know, that made Mrs. Bounds piss herself." Because I'm sure by now the story had become legendary and embellished on a thousand times over. The popular kids embraced me and my weird sense of humor because of one girl...
Leslie and I started hanging out after school. I have so many fond memories of us doing absolutely nothing. We lived closed to eachother so she would come over often and we'd stay up all night just talking about life. Her mom loved me.
As you have probably guessed by now I started developing a crush on her and people started wondering about us as well. one of her close friends asked if we were secretly dating. I told her no but it didn't seem to suffice. As if she were confronting me with fact she said "Well, you do spend alot of time together... alone." I knew it was a hopeless situation to be had though. I knew me asking her out would fuck up everything I had worked so hard to have with her lest we disrupt the social structure. The head cheerleader does not go out with the class clown. This is how things worked out at our little rural highschool in the South. I felt like I had gotten away with murder just being her friend. Then I had to move. The night before I left to move to California my senior year she came over. She was not happy. Before she left she looked into my eyes welled up with tears and while fighting my own back I told her I would always be there for her.
I went years without saying anything. Through the drunken e-mails and phonecalls and letters I said not a damn word about my love for her. She was just happy to hear from me. I didn't want to put that on her. What good would it do?
Fast forward. Christmas 2002. I took a plane back to visit my family that year and when I arrived one of the first things I did was call Leslie. We met up at a local bar and she ran up to me jumped in my arms. God, how good that felt. She caught me up on all the latest gossip and we knocked a couple rounds back in the process. My heart was getting heavy. It started getting late and there was alot more going on in my head than what I was letting on. We left the bar and came back to my house and stood in the driveway. She told me a couple more stories and asked if I remembered some random things we used to do. Then it came time to say goodbye and she walked over to give me a hug. She held on for dear life and made reference to crying again just like the last time.
I had been wrestling with my inner thoughts all night now. my pregnant mind was full of images of us embracing in a different way. Sharing a long overdue kiss. Every sign pointed to me to just be real with myself and say something. I felt like I had nothing to lose. I looked into her eyes.
"Leslie, you know I always lov..."
And right there she stopped me by placing her finger over my lips.
"I know." she said.
She gave me another quick hug and a kiss on the cheek and got into her car to drive off into the night. We still occassionally talk from time to time via e-mail. She's a happily married dentist with two kids. And me... well I'm in a happy relationship with a wonderful woman. Still, I will always cherish those memories and what we had. Even though it was nothing but a crush.

"It was a delicate balance of aristocrats and peasants. I knew my place."
You just described highschool perfectly. Its just a smaller version of the realworld condensed.
For that a +2

BEST....RESPONSE.....EVAR....
Oh yeah, good story too.
I know how it is in the rural highschools, except I was the "dork who everyone picked on."
Now I'm the "Dork who everyone picked on, who joined the military, found a super hot chick, had a son, and don't take no shit from nobody anymore."
