China's active entry into the War on Terrorism was a welcome break for our army, which was experiencing a severe shortage of troops. Within weeks, millions of Chinese soldiers, many of them fresh from boot camp, arrived in Iraq, Afghanistan and any other area with terrorist activities. They might have been inexperienced in urban warfare, but more than made up for it in numbers. No insurgent worth his camel would attack the swarm of men milling about, especially since every single Chinese death resulted in a massive crackdown that sometimes eradicated an entire cell. Stop-loss orders from the Pentagon were retracted. With their help, peace in Iraq was assured. We pulled out soon after.
In Afghanistan, their main task was to find the man responsible for their nuclear September 11. Combined intelligence efforts indicated that Osama had fled back to the hills of Tora Bora, with all his remaining men in tow to make a final stand. Compared to the mountains where they fought the Tibetan nationalists, Tora Bora was a piece of cake for the veteran PLA soldiers. With their new DT-27 "Devil's Tongue" flame tank, they quickly cleared cave after cave of militiamen. The intense heat acted as a massive vacuum in the confined space, those who didn't burn to death in the first seconds of the firestorm were found as asphyxiated corpses.
The decisive battle took place in a large cave at the northeastern end of the hills. Due to popular opinion that Osama should be captured alive and made to stand trial in both China and America, the DT-27s were not deployed to ensure a quick end to the fighting. Instead, Chinese and American forces lay siege to the cave. Like most lifelong fighters, Osama sought to become the stuff of legends by defying the infidels for as long as possible, inflicting maximum damage on them in the meantime.
What looked set to be a long siege ended suddenly. A militiaman who was preparing to fling a grenade at the soldiers outside got shot by a sniper from Delta Force. The resulting explosion set off the huge amounts of ammunition that caused the cave to collapse upon itself. Extensive clearing operations and DNA tests soon confirmed that the terror mastermind was among the dead. Fittingly, the man responsible for setting off so many explosions went out with a bang.
With the death of the world's most famous terrorist, the tide of terror began to turn as countries all around the world sought to ride the momentum and launched crippling operations against cells in their own land. By 2047, world leaders felt secure enough to declare final victory in the War on Terrorism. For their role in bringing the war to a swift end, the Chinese president Li Bai extracted a promise from President Eric Cartman that the US would remain neutral in China's future military conflicts. Sino-US ties reached a record high that year.
It is often said that hindsight is 20/20.
In hindsight, the dragon hid its massive tail well.
