The glare of the setting sun reflected off the bronze surfaces of the basilica like an intense fire. The solid orange clouds seemed to be frozen in time, and the air was still. The long avenues and alleyways where empty and eerily silent, an echo could be heard flowing over top the marble structures and monuments of times past. It was the echo of a beast, a single eagle, circling over the temple Capitolinus, as if it where observing on behalf of those who have been, but who are no longer able to influence the events of their creation. A spiraling, thin line of smoke is slowly rising high into the sky. A fire is burning in inside.
"Iuppiter macte isto ferto esto, macte vino inferio esto. Postea porcam praecidaneam inmolato." Recite and proclaim, may my faults be forgiven and the honor of our people be restored. Today, the world has shattered into pieces. Years of abundance and luxuries unthinkable to our elders have corrupted our senses. We have been a drift in a sea of bliss, our amphorae are never dry of wine. We have toiled in illusions of theater and of sport, as we pay to see our fellow citizens depredate themselves for petty fame or for the scraps of a washed out patrician. Our passions have dried, and our pride vanished. It was inevitable.
They will have arrived at any moment now, drunk on power and thirsting unrighteous pleasures. It can no longer be delayed, the price for which we all must pay, is soon at hand. If only my charisma could have won them over, as it did the people. If only we never had need for them. If only...this is what I shall do. I must give them dinar, pay them off, and then flee the city... what is this I have been doing? I am wasting precious time in this state of drunkenness. I must call for my scribe, and for my horse.
The sun had set. Darkness now ruled over the civitas, and smell of fear was overwhelming. Thunder? It was the sound of a chariots crackling through the streets and of columns of men spilling through the city walls. They have arrived...from the state of tasks boredom. Their weapons the pinnacle of modern technology, forged for the protection of the republic, now they will be turned against it, and none will be able to resist their will. All was ripe for the taking, they are ready to relinquish the honors of a new Imperium, prepared to wet their gladiuos with the blood of nobility. The praetorians will now control the fate of the world.

brilliant. a little wordy. still brilliant. what a commonality you've successfully portrayed here.
a commonality only because universal thoughts are expressed in metaphor.

It is not exactly my style, but I was inspired to write it from an attempt of someone else on the subject matter.
I don't watch movies, but have read a good deal.
