I am happy this lovely Christmas Eve. I have my peppermint altoids, my PC games, and a song in my heart.
I was just thinking about a few old friends of mine. Two of the best I'll ever have. I lived in Central Illinois for a while, well, the first thirteen years of my life. There, I knew two boys, brothers, who had an interesting situation.
Their mom worked at a bar, was a drunk, and smoked a lot (even though she had asthma). Their dad didn't live with them, but an abusive boyfriend did. I was afraid of Mike like a cat is afraid of the sink. I just avoided him as best I could. Mike was a big, mean, angry man. I mean, big. Like, this big: |------------|
Mike screamed at the children a lot. One day, we caught this screaming on our answering machine. Tony, one of the boys, had been calling from some reason, and Mike was screaming at his youngest sister, whose name I do not remember anymore. My parents looked at me and asked, "Is that Mike?"
I brought the three of them over and played the message again for them and suggested that they use this message as proof of something wrong going on and give it to the authorities. They, however, denied it. The boyfriend and mother had already had a child together. (I am just assuming that she didn't smoke/drink during the pregnancy because the baby was perfectly fine.)
One day, I believe it was August of 2001, their mother had an asthma attack and died. I believe she was DOA, but I don't remember now. A week later, the three of them moved to live with their dad in Chicagoland somewhere. Mike went somewhere else with the baby, I never heard anything from him again. What killed me was that even in that week, he still treated those kids like they were dogs. He still yelled at them, whistled for them, and I wouldn't be surprised if he hit them once or twice. I ended up moving to where I am now in late June of 2002.
I have made attempts to get ahold of them again, but all of them failed. You know, I really hope they have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
