Do a song in 7 (like Floyd's 'Money') and I'll be your love slave.
------------------
Note the part where she said something about 'love slave'... The way I figure it, you can't have too many of those! They always come in handy on rainy or snowy days like this one... I could just yank her out of the closet and force her to fulfill my every fantasy.
Also on the last post Sassmasterr and Blitzkreig_Bob requested "Territorial Pissings"... Combine these two requests and you get "Territorial Pissings" in 7/8 time...
Also, with the battle for uber waging, http://www.ubersite.com/m/55144 I feel it's necessary to mark my territory in the age-old fashion! (This means WAR bitches! LONG LIVE SOLEMN!)
So without further ado, I give it to you... (No, not that! That's now reserved for my new love slave.)

I finally listened to the Territorial Pissings remake since that's what this post is about, and I must say I do prefer the arrangement to some of the others. The execution's not half bad either. (Heh) BOB's right, very Cobainesque on the vocs.

Self production is pretty sweet/admirable. Trent Reznor did essentially the same thing on all the NIN albums so far. and Trent Reznor is the mn. so +2.

Click the link at the bottom of the post, Bob, that'll take you to the ETS homepage. There is some stuff on there...most of that is a bit heavier than what I usually do.

Holy shit. You sound just like Cobain on vocals. The time signature changes/syncopations are a nice touch.
This is awesome. You have any originals?

Actually self-production is pretty common these days. Don't know about Paul McCartney... I know he's quite capable.
I do know of one very incredible example of that though, and that's Jeremy Enigk's album "Return of the Frog Queen."
That album is fucking AWESOME! There are TONS of instruments, and he plays them all.

Was it Paul McCartney who made the studio album where he played every instrument and did all of the production?
Anyway, I'll be back in fifteen minutes after my dialup home connection downsloads it.

AJ: sorry, I missed that one. I guess I can't say it wasn't by popular demand...
dodahdave: you are absolutly right. Good ear! It goes into 8/8 for once measure during the transitions between the chorus and verse, and the bridge is felt in 2/4. Thank you for the compliment. I appreciate it.

Wow, I am fucking impressed!
I've always felt that if an artist is going to cover another song, the artist should have something original to contribute to it. I think you've blown that criterion out of the water with this cover.
Oh, and is it me, or does the song drop into 8/8 a few times throughout? Just curious...

We've got a Mackie CFX 20 board that's really more geared for live application, (because of it's limited outputs) and we've got everything piped through there. From there we do various things. Most of the time we just try to get the mix as perfect as we can on the board and run everything stereo out of the board into a Fostex 2 channel hard disk recorder. Other times I'll drag my PC over there and record on Acid Pro or Cubase or whatever I feel like using that particuar day. I've got a 8 channel layla sound card I've had for years but never had a program that would record more than 2 channels at once. I've got some freeware I use, but I really need to get Sonar or something similar. I also do some production stuff on Reason. Most all editing is done in Acid, and mastering on CD Architect.
Other gear.
Drums - DW
Rotos (no clue what brand)
Pic and regular snares
Chimes etc.
Guitars-
Peavey Wolfgangs
(our guitarist also has a Tele and Les Paul but uses the Wolfgangs pretty much exclusively)
Mesa Head, Line 6 cabs
Line 6 PODs
various Boss stom boxes
My gear is crap. I'm a guitar player by nature but there are no good bassists around so I play bass. All my money is still wrapped up in guitar shit.
Yahmaha bass
Behringer Bass V-amp
I have a crappy Peavey amp but I've borrowed a pretty nice Fender bass amp from a friend.
Mic's
The AKG standard kick drum mic
Octava condensors
SM 57's on pretty much everything else, except guitar, EV Cobalt.
We also purchased the MXL two mic pack with the large diaphragm condesor for vocs and a smaller condensor. (Not quite as hot as the Octava's, which isn't necessarily a bad thing) We've yet to really use them (except as an ambiant room mic) though as we have more than enough mics as is and right now we're instrumental so we're not recording vocs. For $99 for the two though it wasn't a bad purchase.
I think that's most of it...

At some point you just have to say "this is it" and be done with it. As for the arrangement, I had about 4 different ideas swirling with this one, and I had to settle on something.
Territorial Pissings and Stay Away should be the most difficult to remake because there isn't really a whole lot you can do with the music to make them more melodic.
What kind of equipment you on, E?

Yea, I produce/engineer all my stuff.
Skweetis was away for the holiday on this one, but he usually helps with the production.
Not much to it really. Have to have tube amps for guitars. That's a biggie. Marshall JCM800 half stack with EL34 tubes and Celestion Greenbacks always does the trick for rock.
A lot of it is equipment. There is no substitute for good equipment.

Hey, Eggman, thanks for the critique. I appreciate you taking the time to listen and review.
The purpose of this project is to interpret these songs in a different way than the original. I understand how you feel about hearing them changed so drasticly. I guess my only advise to a Nirvana fan who is trying to listen to them would be to take them for what they are and try not to compare too much to the original.
As far as posting your own music on ubersite... You can attach up to 1mb. If it's over 1 megabyte then you'll have to either seek outside hosting. (You can get free hosting from www.geocities.com or www.angelfire.com.) I am sure there are others as well. You can look around.
I know that angelfire won't allow you to link directly from another website to a file, so if you used them, you'd have to instruct everyone to copy the link and paste it in the browser's address bar. Not a big deal really, but could cut down on listeners, as people are lazy fucks for the most part. Our microwave generation wants everything and they want it NOW!
Also, most of these sites will not just host your files... You have to at least build a rudimentary webpage. If you don't know how, they have tutorials that show you how.
Hope that's helpful.

Ok, there were 4 I hadn't heard before-
Lithium- Hmm. I was about to blast you for it, but then I listened to it a second time and I really liked it. So I'm not sure how I feel about this one. When you try to compare it to Nirvana it just sounds weird... but if you think of it as an original it's not bad. You've got kind of a nasal voice in some parts which reminded me of The Smashing Pumpkins. That's a good thing.
Polly- I think this one kinda ruins/changes the feeling of the song. When I listen to the covers you did, I'm thinking that you're trying to keep the feeling of the song but portray it in a different way. If that's true, then this song was a bit of a slip. Otherwise, it's not bad.
Territorial Pissings- My favorite. It's good, nothing I'd change. It's alot like the original. That's probably why I like it the most.
Something In The Way- Ugh. It's one of my favorite songs ever. I hate this version. I can't stand the "something in the way" inbetween every line.
Something In The Way aside, it's amazing. I feel like an ass critizing anything because the fact that you can put that kind of shit together is so much more than I could do, but I'm trying to be honest and not be a complete suck up like I usually am to you.
One more thing- Is there a way to attach music to a post without hosting your own site? Do you know of any sites that I could use?
