It has been estimated that 22,000 people have been killed by that earthquake/tsunami
TWENTY TWO THOUSAND lives lost.
What i find most angering about this phenominal tragedy, is that 2 days after it happened, American tv was only just starting to twig.
I live in Sydney Australia, and we, being a neighbouring country to those affected have had constant reports and news bulletins. They've kept us up to date.
But you know what? 911 made bigger news on tv here in Oz. we had total blanket coverage of 911, i mean ALL channels were covering it, all regular programming cancelled to see screaming Americans and more "oh my gaawwd"'s than i've heard in all my life combined.
I spoke to a mate of mine yesterday who's in the US at the moment, and he sat scouring 300 tv channels to find some news about the quake, but couldnt find it anywhere.
CNN.com has it as a DEVELOPING STORY. It happened on fucking boxing day!
Does anyone else find that a bit disturbing?
Nobody to blame? No fear to push?
Immagine if a tsunami hit the californian coast, can you immagine it if an earthquake leveled San Fran?
I recon you'd care then.

yes as a matter of fact, our news channels pretty much buy all their content from US sources, so we knew aallll about your hurricanes.

Just out of curiosity (and I know this was on a smaller scale), did your news channels give a lot of coverage last summer when hurricaines were decimating large parts of FL and other southeastern states, killing people, wiping out homes, and destroying lives?

America has invaded the fault line. So far, 20,000 marines have drowned...

While I acknowledge that the priorities of the U.S. government leave something to be desired, since when does the liberal Jew media represent the entire U.S.? 9/11 was a malicious act, the tsunami was a natural disaster. You can't be upset at the fact that tsunamis don't get the same coverage as acts of war. Besides, you can't very well retliate and bomb mother nature. I'm sure if we could, we would. Lets kill that bitch!

This was pure ignorance.
It's a natural disaster. What kind of coverage do you need? Floodwaters, dead floating bodies, families in misery? You know why there isn't as much coverage as 9/11?
THERE'S NO FUCKING ELECTRICITY! They're using the generators to give these people power, not run a fucking news show. Use your fucking head. In 9/11, we had emergency personel to help people. They don't have that kind of shit in these countries. Most of everyone's efforts over there are to bring relief, not tell the fucking news.
This is why so many people died in the first place. There was no way to warn them that this was coming. No technology whatsoever. What do you expect in a 3rd world country like that? Hell, disease kills millions in Africa every year. You want coverage of that too? Malaria, Ebola, AIDS? I bet you'd like to see some AIDS infected Africans telling there story, wouldn't you. Maybe you should think before you post.

You know Im an american. I was sitting back thinking yesterday that their should be more coverage on this. Its a shame. The media controls how people think in this country. The funny thing is the bigger issues are the ones that really dont matter. Yesterday, they talked about the tsunami for about 1 minute then switched right to the major snow storms in the mid-west. WHERE 27,000 PEOPLE DID NOT DIE!!!!!

The fact is your right. The US has blocked all Canadian news recently, making it impossible for Yankees to get any non biased news from channels like CBC and CTV.

A tsunami fall under the catagory "act of nature". ergo, there is no one to blame.
Give us someone to point a finger at and we'll be all over it. Media first!

p.s. Did you know? No matter what you call it, in the Atlantic Ocean a hurricane is still a hurricane. In the Pacific Ocean it is called a typhoon and in the Indian Ocean it is called a cyclone. Far out, huh?

I definatly understand and can see the difference between a terror attack and a natural disaster, and thankyou to those who can see my point, becasue natural disaster or otherwise, if it was happening in America it would be big fucking news and as a result the rest of the world would cop it too.

How can all of you make such distinctions? To me it is exactly the same thing.
I think we should nuke the fault line.

I think a lot of it has to do with the nature of the tragedy. The 9/11 was an attack against a country, and was tantamount to a declaration of war, which potentially affects everybody. 9/11 also had a lot of questions that needed answering (how did this happen, why did this happen, who did this, etc etc). Earthquakes generate few questions.
That being said, the worldwide media is kind of a whore. And currently her American client is paying most of the bills.

Ok, for a more in depth reply:
First of all, it's hard to get media coverage on this because first of all I doubt getting a camera in there is either possible or a top priority for Thailand. I'm assuming they'd rather let a plane of supplies land rather than a plane of American Newscasters, and I think the sufferers feelt eh same way. Secondly, we care, we definitely care, there are threads at every forum I go to. This just isn't the kind of thing that updates come quick enough for a viewer to keep their channel turned to CNN. This is more of a website thing. Every morning you wake up and check CNN.com to see how they're doing.
And should I add teh American government has donated 15 million to the relief effort? Should I? I should.
SO before you judge us on our media coverage alone, keep in mind that just because it doesn't pull in ratings doesn't mean we don't care.

I watched CNN for coverage of the tsunami and I was getting pissed off at the English anchor they had. The US station didn't even bother to stir their anchors to cover it. They just took the feed from the UK like they did when Christopher Reeves died. I can't stand the anchor guy. He would interrupt people (especially his co-anchor) and talked like a total dick. Normally I enjoy English accents, but this guy...fuck was he a dick. I want to punch him in the face and then kick him in the neck.
I was so happy when US feed came back and it was time for Daybreak. Carol Costello is hot. Then again, I only see her at 3 a.m. when I'm so tired I can't see straight.

Right you are. A "Far away tragedy". Well; I didn't expect more of the US. Self centered arrogant egomaniacs. At least some of them. Ahhh...cmon. I'm just kidding. I like you. DAMMIT! ASSHOLES!
So I said it.

Yes, indeed, I think you miss the point on this one. 9-11 is what humans did to other humans. It makes people angry at other people, that's what the news was covering back then. This was unpreventable, you can't blame anyone for what happened, so it's just people dying. The media finds that tragic, but not interesting.

I care more about this tragedy than 9/11... if terrorists had caused the earthquake, it'd be a bigger story. But good 'ol unpredictable mother nature did. That's not headline news here in the U.S.
