A deep darkness saturated every corner of Eric's surroundings as a veil of confusion lifted and he came to realize where he was.
In the deep, cold and dark recesses of one's mind, there is nothing that cannot be accounted for. All things in the mind have an external or internal source, though they are not always identified or understood. Most people have very little contact with this subconscious realm, flitting in and out only for brief moments to pick up fragmented pieces of information to fuel dreams, to find inspiration, and to grasp the occasional obscure memory.
Yet Eric was beginning to understand the nature and source of thought, and in turn, that of reality as well.
In his dreams, Eric had the ability to perform miraculous feats for as long as he could remember dreaming. This went back for a handful of years, before which his slumber was invariably dreamless and restful, yet neither condition afflicted him at any recent time.
At present a strange lucidity had begun to take over Eric's dreams; one by which Eric, for the first time, had the ability to recognize the fact that he was dreaming and utilize this knowledge to heighten his power and understanding. This began shortly after the introduction of a malevolent force, prying at the edges of Eric's mind; seeking entry and almost certainly his undoing.
Eric surveyed his position in what now appeared to be a cave, musty with the scent of air not breathed or recycled in ages, and wholly permeated with a dampness that chilled one to the bone. Without really utilizing his eyes (as he understood even those to be figments in this place), he took in the delicate details of the hanging stalactites and risen stalagmites, protruding like teeth from the gaping maw of a colossus; the gentle and methodical dripping of what he imagined to be water all around him; the thick and comfortable moss that cradled his toes in the bedrock.
Without truly moving his body, Eric rather moved the world about him in a curious way he had recently gained a mastery of. Suddenly his surroundings were flooded with the pale orange light of the precious few moments before a sunrise, and the caress and fresh scent of the morning's breeze. He stood perched on the edge of a massive precipice, the entryway to the cave behind him, and miles of thick foliage and scattered lakes and ponds in all directions.
Gazing at the morning light glinting off of the waters below, it amazed him how beautifully intricate the world about him seemed now; at the same time, he knew each minute detail intimately, almost as if he was creating the reality around him from the moment he began to perceive it.
And yet, there remained a single element that he was quite certain had no origin in his mind; it was the only tangible thing around him that he did not have a personal understanding with. A thick, black mass hung over the far horizon, concealing the sun, though light still eminated about the land. It was the drawing storm; the rising front with which he found himself inevitably drawn and at the same time petrified to confront.
The timeless adage sprung to mind: "It is always darkest just before the dawn."

Thanks, Doc... that means a lot, it really does. As I've said before, half the reason I write is to have my work read, appreciated and critiqued.

Forgot to ask you guys what you thought of the new logo. It took around two days to put together, using Macromedia's Fireworks application.
Mostly used the pen tool, gradient shading and some textures. I'm getting better at working with the program.

Not a single response. Guess I wasted my time by coming back here.
Oh, well. To be honest, the world's a little simpler without Ubersite.
It's been real, folks.

On a personal note, I'm not "back"... just like I was never officially "gone". I'm not the type to post a message when I decide to take a few months off from reading and writing posts. However, I did tell a few friends that I would be posting occasionally and reviewing the works of select authors... and I am a man of my word.
Also, I didn't want to head off to the NYC Uber celebration without at least one post under my belt since the last Ubercon I went to. That would be rather sad.
I'll probably return to reading and writing on a daily basis when things calm down at work. Who knows. We shall see where things take me. To all of you who are fans of the work I've done, thanks for your support. You guys (and you know who you all are... most of you were at NYC in early November) are half the reason I continue to write. The other half is because it's something I do enjoy doing when I have the time, and I enjoy getting better at it with the critique and response of all of you. I can't wait to catch up with many of you at the New Year's party.
Take care, everyone... see you next time.
