I can't believe what I've read on here about american aid to Asia over the past few days. The people that have been affected are real people with families and hopes and dreams. If they had enough money to put right the problems (like the US did with Florida) then they obviously would. At the moment there are millions of people at risk of getting Cholera and Dysentry because they have no access to clean water supplies. The people who can help them, the govenment and charities are asking for money, and some of you are sitting there saying that they have asked for too much!
These people did not bring this on themselves, they are victims of a natural disaster. They are not asking for money from you, because they can't, they are too busy trying to keep alive in the mud after all their stuff got washed away. It's the governments of the world who have been asked for money, although there are plenty of ways you can donate- to the red cross for example. I don't know how any of you can say how much is enough or not enough- we don't have accurate figures on deaths or casualties yet.
I am from the UK but I was in the USA this summer, I drove down the west Coast. I was shocked by the way you treat the most vulnerable citizens in your own country. I saw hundreds and hundreds of people obviously suffering from mental health peoblems living rough in parks. I have travelled all over europe and to Australia, and none of the countries have such a widespread homlessness problem. Is it because Americans don't care about each other either?
We're all citizens of the world- shouldn't we take responsiblity for each other. Unfortunately some people hate Americans for their percieved selfish behaviour. This is the kind of attitude that make speople in the world plot terrorist attacks on the USA.

It started when the government decided to take over social issues... they've been fucking things on an ever growing scale scince then. As a result citizens can be less socially resposible because the government is suppose to take care of it. But as long as the rich keep the power the middle class keeps thier mouths shut, and the poor are kept weak, the cycle will continue.

Firstly, maybe natural disasters are just god/allah's/mother nature's/the big cheese's way of controlling our exponential population explosion. Seriously, nothing like thinning out the numbers. And hell, if you can survive the dysentery and cholera, then survival of the fittest nodded in your direction; congratulations.
Further, mentally disturbed homeless people and us not caring? Where exactly do you take the person living on the street if they have a mental disorder? The police? They'll laugh at you. Homeless shelter? Not unless it's one that facilitates crazy folk. Mental institution? Maybe if I had a few thousand extra dollars to blow. My house? Are you fucking insane? So... if you have a solution (besides socialism, because the US in general has voted numerous times against that type of stuff, so the odds of that happening are rather shitty) then please, by all means, offer a solution. Otherwise, shut up. Seriously. Do you mean to tell me that there are NO homeless folk in Europe? I have seen otherwise.
Oh, and how about this one? If you fix all of your country's problems first, perchance that someone here might listen to you. Until that time, well, fat chance.

Having lived in both socialist countries and the USA, I have to speak up on this one. Sure, we have more bums, as we aren't socialist like, let's say, Germany. But socialist countries like France and Germany are headed for disaster. Their population, on average, is getting older. This means there are fewer young people working and contributing to social security and more old people relying on it. It is just a matter of time before the socialist systems go bankrupt, unless they drastically change. We face the same problem here with social security and it pisses me the hell off. I pay lots of my earned income in taxes, and by the time I'm old enough to use Social Security checks or Medicare, they will both no longer exist, as they are today. With the baby boomers retiring, there will soon be a deficit and I'll be paying not for myself later on in life, but for someone else. Bad situation all around.
You have good intentions, but you're pretty naive. I don't have answers to fix these problems but I also don't go around spouting things like "we're all citizens of the world", let's all help each other, woo woo. If you do have answers, and they would work, fucking hell then, go run for office and I'll support you 100%. I agree, we should all help each other, but we're all trying to take care of ourselves first.

We gave more aid to the Tsunami victims than did the entire UN I don't wanna hear about that shit. Also, interesting fact, my band and some german bands put on a show here in Germany and raised like 5 grand for a tsunami charity a month ago. About homeless people in the states... well I guess you could argue that because we aren't socialist like Germany is and don't have National Health Care, these people are being left for dead. You could, I wouldn't though. We are actually so free to do what we want *within reason* that we can be homeless and crazy if we want as well. I say, let the homeless stay homeless, and let the crazy be crazy, and let me get by with not paying 50 percent of my paycheck to pay for national health care!

Its true that there are lots of mental people on the streets in parts of America. In the UK, if you are nuts you get taken into care, at the expense of the taxpayer of course, they cant pay for themselves. Its unfortunate that head cases end up at on the streets as a result of illness,
it happens in a lot of places.

Wow. So ignorant. I definitely disagree with some of the things the American government does
but that does not make Americans bad people. That's like saying all people from the UK must
but addicted to heroin. That's just stupid. PS- I've been to Australia too and they have huge
homeless problems- not to mention the segregation. I guarantee you that unemployment and
homelessness are problems in most places all over the world. Some places are just better at
hiding it. If you pulled your head out of your ass for a tick you might see that. Also, try
blaming governments for lack of social services rather than society at large. Whatever you
want to believe, we are not in charge of other people's destinies and sometimes there is just
nothing you can do that is enough.

you're right michelle- and I'll say again- I do not disagree with the war in Iraq. I live in naval city and feel very strongly that it is important to support our troops. good point about the red cross too, and poor administration is a good reason not to give money to certain charities. I'm not objecting to people who are giving sympathy but not money, but for the people saying that the people affected by this disaster don't deserve any help.

People are suffering and you think America (and other governments)should and could do more to help. You think Americans in general are bitching about the amount of money spent in the attempt to "save" human beings in serious danger.

Well Cindy, the way I see it - We're damned if we do and damned if we don't.
You demand that America and any other able government do everything possible to help these people that are suffering due to a natural disaster. BUT, it's NOT alright for America (and other countries)to try and save folks in Afghanistan suffering under the taliban or the Iraqi people from a sadistic, murderous regime.
Why is it that the rest of the fucking world gets to tell America when, where and how much?
The bitching you hear may be from taxpayers fed up with bloated budgets for corrupt domestic assistance programs. Pissed off that millions in foreign aid money is skimmed off the top by gov't officials. Disgusted that precious disaster/famine/poverty relief money is never spent on actual rebuilding or food or economic growth.
Tell me where to send a case of bottled water because I'll be damned if I send one fucking dime to any "AID" agency. I'll give the Red Cross my blood (and I do, twice a year)but I do not even trust them with my hard earned money.

What happened was we gave 15 million dollars... and some UN Fuck called us stingy for it because we werent giving away our entire GDP every year, and we spend money on things we choose to.
