In this video game age continues, resets, and extra lives, we as a generation (and I refer to the 18-24 year old males, in general) have been taught to expect a second chance. Fuck up lately? Yeah, but it's no big deal. Try harder next time. Well, damn, my eyes are open now. Sometimes, there is no next time. It's the realization of that simple truth that will make or break me and my peers.
Wait, let me back up. I'm not an Uber-Oldie, but I've been around. Check my history, it's all there. Some of you may even remember me from such defining moments as "YellowDragon being a self-righteous fucktard" or "The definition of insolence: YellowDragon at a glance." Well, I pop in from time to time to check on the community. Hi Tom. Hi SpikeGoddess. And this time around, things are a little different.
I don't live in the suburbs anymore. I don't drive my car to work at two in the morning. I don't throw packages for a paycheck and I haven't smoked my pipe in two months. I live where Uncle Sam tells me to. I live with 72 other jacktards who I wouldn't trade for anyone else in the world. Holy shit, I'm in the Navy. And I thought it would never happen. A year of angst and apathy has been purged from me in eight weeks of fun and adventure, real life with real consequences. So, this is what it's like away from the teat.
Lemme' tell you a little story. I just graduated from boot camp with the 72 aforementioned jacktards (Hoo rah 906!) and we're now on liberty weekend. I just read that a friend I shipped out with got separated from the Navy with an Other-Than-Honorable discharge for slapping another recruit with an open hand. I don't know if that means jack to anyone else out there, but an OTH discharge is a thing that goes on your record. This isn't that vandalism charge you got for taking a sharpie to the cafeteria table when you were 17, the one that the principal said was going on your (Cue voice of God) PERRRMANNENT RECOOOOORRRRD. This is real shit: if you want a job at a company that so much as leases farts out to the government, you're screwed. No dice. You go home now.
I'm not sure if I'm trying to send out a warning or just relate an incident. It doesn't really matter. I don't know everything, but I'll tell you what I know: you can't press the start button and go back to the beginning of the level. You can't insert 25 cents within ten seconds. Sometimes, if you're lucky, you'll get a second chance, but don't count on it.
That is all. Carry on.

I don't think SpikeGoddess comes here anymore. I wish she did, though, it was nice not being the only theatre geek here.

yeah, that's actually not true. they just say it to scare people. i'm sure it ruins your chances at some places, but it's really not the big deal they say it is. think of it this way- if you weren't scared to get kicked out and you really wanted to get out of the military, wouldn't you look for a way out?
god, i love being a civilian again...

What you're saying is totally right. It's not just in America either. In Australia we are basically taught that "there is always a second chance." This year I graduated high school, only because I was able re-submit all the assignments I didn't do well enough on. Too easy, teaching us the wrong lesson.

Welcome to the service, bud. Yeah, an OTH is a killer. Last week I did a health and welfare inspection and found a baggie of the green stuff in a soldier's room. And she was only two weeks from getting out of the Army. Now she's still getting out, but with an OTH instead of an honorable. Stupid shit for brains. She'll never do better than working at McDonald's.
