All Right.
This song marks number 8 in my personal quest to remake the entire Nevermind Album, as well as my first post of the New Year! WOO HOO! This also marks the '2/3 of the way to completion' point. This train is a-movin' and ain't nobody gonna stop it now, unless you're riding a big fucking cow or something - and if you are, you've got bigger problems than stopping my train...
------
Interesting bits of information:
Our site stats report that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is still the most popular Nirvana song with right at 500 downloads in December. Next is "Come As You Are" with 411. Of course "Territorial Pissings" is bringing up the rear so far, only having been up a week.
Also of note: a total of 6 gigabytes worth of mp3 files were downloaded from our site in the month of December. I guess a few people like free shit after all...I was beginning to wonder.
------
The subject of this week has been "Drain You", which was always one of my personal favorites from the album. Most of you who are familiar with the original should pick up the changes pretty easily.
Ok, I'll shut up now. You probably don't read any of this anyway...

ets, have you ever heard 'August on the Island' by Don Ross?
Its one of the toughest picking songs I've heard. you should give it a shot, im having a ton of trouble with keeping tempo.
(I can't find the tab though..maybe on olga.net or tabcrawler maybe?)

I just dl'd the eq tweaked version and have it repeating on mmjukebox as I type. Adding those high mids helped out quite a bit. I still think the kick drum and bass sound sort of boxy/muddy..
of course alot of that is probably these cheap ass headphones I'm using :P
It should be interesting to hear the final product after it's normalized and otherwise all mastered up.
Other than that, I'm loving the hell out of this one. "Drain You" is my 4th favorite song on that album, at least lyrically. I actually find myself preferring the new arragement to the original.
Quite honestly I think the quality of the engineering here speaks well for this piece... I always thought the original was a little too slick and polished sounding for the nature of the song, but that's just my opinion.
and don't worry Skweetis... I'm sure you get to something on the next one... maybe a triangle solo?
<snickers>
Can't wait to hear what "On a Plain" ends up like.

Rock on mister man!
This, along with 'SLTS' and 'Come As You Are' stand out from the rest off the cover album to me . I wasn't feeling Nirvana in their hay day, I didn't rate them at all. However It's great to enjoy the results of your inspiration. You've done a great job yet again!
Thanks for sharing.

I downloaded one of these, and my husband came in while I was listening to it. He proceeded to act like he was some sort of all-knowing music critic, and point out every single difference between your version and Nirvana's (because I so obviously cared.). I told him it wasn't SUPPOSED to sound the same, that I liked it, that I didn't CARE what he thought, and could he please shut up and let me enjoy the rest of the song. Then I went and downloaded the rest of them and played them, just to spite him. I'm glad I did.

Yea, I will probably do that, I would imagine. I will leave it as a suprise. Perhaps I won't post it. Maybe I'll do something like put it only on the CDs I give away, or some other such gimmicky shit.
I will be giving away CDs of this entire project at the end of it for cost. In other words, I won't be making money on it, I'll just be recouping my expense of shipping and blank CDs. I was toying with the notion of actually having a run of 1000 or so printed up and giving them away for shipping costs. I will see about setting up a paypal account to do that. Or I'll accept money orders through the mail or something too.
I normally wouldn't mind just giving them away and not worrying about the shipping, but that could get VERY expensive if 500 people decided to request one. I have noticed in our site's statistics that there are Nirvana forums that have links to our stuff now, and I have posted on a couple as well, so you never know, I might grow to regret the promise of giving these away through the mail, as it could get very tedious. :P
For now, at least, I have every intention of doing this.

Yea, Matt, I had thought of that too in fact! Good point! I will on the final posting. If I did it now, that would render all of these links useless. I really don't want to have that many copies of one song sitting on the sever... know what I mean?
I'll change them on the final post though if I remember to, but for now, individuals will have to change them themselves.
Thanks for bringing that up though.

might i make a suggestion though.... minor suggestion.
with the filenames, put the track number first, so when people download all of them, they have them in order.
like:
01-smellsliketeenspirit.mp3
02-etc
it would be easier for me to make a playlist. :-P

DMD: Stin has been working on the arrangement. Apparently she had a few problems and had to start over, so it's taking a bit. I assure you it WILL be done, and you WILL get your email when it's all ready to go! :)

Ok, I went ahead and did a little EQing on this and replaced the file. See if that's any better. It still won't be perfect, but it should be a little better than the one you had. I couldn't remix, but I tweaked the final track and added some high midrange to the overall.
Sounds less buried and muted and warbley.

You guys are definitely correct. I listened to this one in my car on the way home from the studio today, and it did sound off. I had to adjust the EQ's a bit to get it to sound decent. There will be an update on this one within the next week or so.
Also, all of these were mixed down with various reference speakers, none of which are the professional studio monitors I really need for the job, so there will be some trial and error involved in mixing.
When I do the final mastering when the entire project is done, I will borrow some from a friend to get it done where it hopefully sounds correct. Till then, these will have to be good enough. Not trying to make excuses. The sound will be corrected though.
THANK YOU for pointing the problems out! You guys' comments and critique will really help a LOT when mastering time comes!
If I could, I'd like to take a poll of you who've heard all of these so far.
Which of these songs sounds the closest to being 'correct' in the mix to you, in your opinion?

Yessss, thankyou for doing this song!
It had a bit of a different feel to it than most of your previous ones, I liked it.
But ya, I kind of agree with some people's comments of the vocals being too soft in some parts of the song. I mean, I have no problem with muted vocals, just these are a little too low I think, maybe play around with it. Hell what do I know, these are awesome.

For remaking "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in a major key I commend you.
I still despise Nirvana but these are listenable, and to transform them so radically takes talent.

I despise Nirvana with every fibre of my being, and have always maintained that they were overrated hacks with no actual musical talent whatsoever... rather they just managed to tap into a market and use that for success. This, however, is excellent. Your series may be the first time I've ever been able to listen to Nirvana without alternately shuddering and gagging. And that, my friend, is a miracle.

I haven't yet listened, but the idea that you are remaking Nirvana pleases me, because it leads me to believe that your remakes will be real songs instead of the fucking bullshit garbage Nirvana managed to make a career on.
+2 for humanitarian reasons.

On second listen, it isn't quiet. I just had my media player master volume down a little.
Still tinny though. If there is bass on this song, you can't hear it. And the vocals need to come up.

To elaborate . . .
It sounds quiet. I had to turn my speakers way up to find the music at all. Then once I did, it sounded a little tinny to me. The highs are a little high, and the cymbals and the guitar swallow the vocals. Maybe you mixed it that way, and I'm trying to make it conform to the Nirvana version in my head, but personally I'd bring the vocals up a bit. And the bass, too.
It just doesn't have a very "full" sound.
And I realize that this coincides in no way with the other elaboration on how the sound is off. Sorry.

I can't quite put my finger on it... It's almost like it was recorded in an arena or an open-air studio.
Also, personally, I think the vocal track could be a bit bolder. With the style of your voice, there are times when the vocals almost "fade" into the music.
There's also an almost muted feedback (low-freq) throughout the track, although that may just be the compression of the mp3.

hmmm. Do you guys care to elaborate? Maybe I missed something. I was mixing through a pair of 6X9's that were cranked up a little bit, and through headphones. (Everything sounds better in headphones.)
If you can put your finger on what seems off about the quality, I'll see if it's something I can tweak. Thanks.

I'm not as crazy about this one as some of the others. But that could be because I think the quality of the audio is a little less, maybe?
I did really like the part where it fades back in with the scream. Kind of "Who-ish" there, but I had to struggle to find anything to compare it to.
Seriously though, what's it like to be talented?
