He is woken by the bed shaking. He mentally stumbles out of sleep and looks over at the woman next to him. But, she's not the same woman he went to bed with. Her eyes have rolled back in her head, her arms legs flailing, and there is a trickle of blood at the corner of her mouth. He starts and sits up. He's not really sure what do, but she told him this happens sometimes. He holds her arms and waits for it to pass. When finally the woman he went to bed with returns and this new creature had disappeared they exchange looks, cuddle up and fall asleep again, wordless.
He has seen the small ones too. The one's where she just goes blank and limp. Like she's passing out of this world momentarily. It sends chills down his spine.
She's been to doctors up and down the coast but they can't seem to find anything wrong with her. Short of demonstrating this in front of one of them, she has no proof. She also complains of migraines and has had a few prescriptions for pain killers. They inquire as to her dosage, her frequency of use, and little about this monster that lives inside her. The doctors are suspicious, wary due to recent law suits and many patients complaining of phantom problems to procure their next fix. How can they differentiate between a junkie and someone who has diseases nobody can diagnose. What's worse is that she's seen this song and dance before and gets defensive and cynical when it starts yet again. This does nothing to calm the doctors' suspicions.
He watches all this and can do nothing. For all the doctors know he is just another junkie parading as her boyfriend to get his cut. Where is your husband they ask her. Well, we are separated, this is my boyfriend. But. . . you are still legally married, right? Well, technically, she answers. Uh huh, well we can try this and . . . He sees the look in their eyes change, their demeanor is not as friendly anymore. Where do they get off being the protectors of marital morality, who the fuck made them judge and jury.
It is the worst feeling in the world to watch her slowly degenerate in front of him while the doctors do nothing but question her validity. It is especially hard when he has to leave her alone. Every time he worries about her being alone with this monster. It's not always as bad as that night, but the damage depends on what she's doing when her body decides to betray her. What happens if she's riding her horse, if she's driving, if she's. . . It doesn't really matter what she's doing there could be injuries or worse. A few times her children have called 911 and probably saved her life, but what if nobody is around. He thinks about this during his six hour drive home. He calls her as soon as he gets home just to hear her voice, just to make sure she's still there. All he can do is hope; hope the next doctor sees something the previous ones haven't, hope that they believe her. Hope that he will see her well again next time he makes that drive.
