I've known you since I was born. For as long as I can remember, our families were close...and you were my friend. I remember using your Commodore computer and thinking it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. I remember playing hockey in your basement and pissing your parents off when we would bang on the steel support columns with our sticks. I remember your retarded golden retriever with the goofy eyes and the drooling problem. I remember your obsession with Nirvana and our "jam sessions" when I got my first electric bass. God...we were aweful. I remember when you broke your arm doing tricks off the ski jump in my back yard...thanks for not suing!

During high school, you disappeared. You were a badass and wanted nothing to do with school or authority. We fell out of touch, but you were still my friend.

I remember that surprise phone call just before senior year of college - you came across one of my band's promotional demos, saw my name on the insert and called our manager. When I got the message, I was floored - it had been a long, long time. But when I called you back, it didn't feel like such a long time. Afterall, we were friends. And friends don't stop being friends just because they fall out of touch.

That was the last time we spoke - almost 4 years ago.

When I sat down at my desk today, I found an e-mail waiting for me from my mom.

"Dear Andrew, Just a quick but sad note... I got a call from Julie today, Richard is dead. He comitted suicide in Boulder, Co. sometime right before the New Year."

Now you're gone and I feel like I could have...should have done something. I should have kept in touch. I should have been there for you when shit got heavy. I should have helped you out of whatever rut you were in. I should have called or visited or written a letter.

But I didn't and I'm so sorry.

Now you're gone and I can only hope that you're still my friend.

You're like the 14th person who has posted a similar story in this forum. Rest assured that despite how wonderful you are, there wasn't anything you could have done for your friend.

In fact, if you were still close, you would be hurting a lot more right now.

You'll forget all about this in 72 hours.

It'll come back to you from time to time when you're drinking.

Please keep your chin up.

Marge: It was a beautiful wedding. I've never seen Selma happier.

Homer: That reminds me -- Troy said something interesting last night
at the bar. Apparently he doesn't really love Selma and the
marriage is just a sham to help his career.
