NECROSIAC 30

Madeline Pasteur lay on the hard metal table in the basement of her mansion and shivered in anticipation.

Beside her, a short plain woman dressed in a dirty surgical smock placed the last of a network of tubes into one of the exposed veins in her naked body, then stopped and waited for acknowledgement.

"Everything is prepared" the woman said dryly "We can begin the transfusion now if you wish"

Madeline turned her head towards her Prime Acolyte and smiled.

"You do understand what to do Gwyneth?" the question came out as a command as much as a query.

Gwyneth nodded emotionlessly and recited her Mistresses orders exactly as they'd been given.

"Yes Madam. If at any point the procedure should go awry, I am to reverse it. Should the procedure prove successful, I am to personally see to it that your original fluids are put in storage"

Madeline nodded then looked at the cement ceiling above her and closed her eyes.

"Very good" she said "Leave me for a moment. I wish to be alone with my thoughts"

A few seconds later, the sound of a heavy metal door squeaking shut told her that her command had been heard and obeyed.

The room around her was dank and cold and by far the most favorite in her home. For a second she wondered how much time she had spent in it over the years. She wondered how much of her life she'd lent to mastering the art of necromancy on her pets, then practicing the perfected surgeries and incantations on her own failing body parts.

"How long?" she asked the room "How many years have I enjoyed you?"

As expected, the room offered no response save the hum of the machinery on the other end of the tubes, the tubes that acted as unholy conduits in another of the Necromancer's sacred trinities.

Necromancer - Machine - Corpse.

With a shrug, she shook off her wandering thoughts and focused instead on the events leading up to the great risk she found herself about to take.

With relish, she re-lived the memory of Mutes heavy boot crushing the life out of Luis Penance' bastard child, stomping down again and again until his hateful visage was nothing more than so much pulp.

She'd heard Mute speak of destroying the budding Necrosiacs on several occasions previous, but had never really been sure he was capable of it until that point. She'd almost written off his promises as so much bravado until the room had filled with the sounds or cracking skull and squishing brain.

After the deed was done, she'd stood in shock, as the knowledge of Mute's infinite capabilities filled her with dread. She'd almost lost herself in despair as she realized she might forever be nothing more than the trophy for the next Pentate. She had always been a woman of ambition and the thought of never realizing her rightful place as ruler of the pact filled her with remorse. For a second she'd stood in horror as their latest victory pounded in her head like the drums of doom but then, like all the men in her life, Mute had made the mistake of underestimating her. He'd left her with the task of seeing to the Necrosiacs body. He'd left her alone with the carcass of the most powerful Necromancer they had ever seen.

She'd realized what she must do even before Mutes commands had finished echoing throughout the room. Her lover had been too enraptured in his brutish win to sense the power which lay quiet and very much alive in the headless carcass pinned at his feet. He'd been too caught up in self worship to notice that something was keeping the body from spilling its reddish grey fluids onto the hardwood floor.

She'd wasted no time after he and his servants had retreated from the room. She'd crossed it and retrieved his sword cane from where it leaned against one plush antique chair, then strode to the acolyte whose body most resembled the Necrosiacs and struck off his head without warning.

Minutes later the remainder of her men had carried Adrian's corpse - wrapped in the clothing of her late Acolyte - to her waiting car, while her Prime dragged the imposter body to the boy in the basement to feed to the machine.

Looking back at it, she supposed she should have tarried awhile with her lover. She knew that, despite his brutishness, he was unnervingly intelligent and might look suspiciously upon her quick departure. Her mind filled with the image of his great bulging body bursting through the door in her basement, intent on tearing her apart for defying his wishes.

With a grunt she propped herself up on her elbows, looked over her shoulder at the door to the room, and listened for the telltale sound of booted feet descending the stairs beyond - heavy and full of rage.

Despite her fears, the room remained quiet save the hum of machinery. The door remained stoically closed.

After a time, she lay back on the table then twisted her head to peer disgustedly at the limp grey body beside her.

The knowledge of what it had been was enough to make her gorge rise and for the thousandth time she found herself filled with trepidation. It was not uncommon for a Necromancer to steal some of the fluids of a more powerful foe. It was a well known fact within the Necromantic arts that some of a defeated casters power could be stolen in such a fashion. The taking of the life fluids from a defeated Necromancer was, she understood, acknowledged by the community in general but was rarely practiced. As much as those who practiced the art of death hated the living, they rarely fought amongst themselves.

But this wasn't a mere Necromancer was it?

As dreadful as the risk of Mute discovering her treachery might be, it paled in comparison to what might happen when she transferred all of the Necrosiacs fluids into herself.

Yes, the risk was great. Greater than any she had ever taken, but somehow she knew the reward could be even greater.

Finally she stood on the threshold of her destiny. At last she had a chance to seize real power.

If her hopes rang true, the next evening she would stand over the devastated bodies of the Pentate and the bitch Necrosiac. She'd revel in their demise as she ground Mutes fat body under her heal.

She'd let her lover do battle with them and then reveal her new found power to whoever was unlucky enough to survive. Afterwards, she'd take her rightful place among the dead and lead the Pact back into the shadows where it belonged. She'd take it deep into the night to live in the nightmares of the living once again.

Somehow she knew, she'd do it or she'd die where she lay on the table.

Braced by her new found determination she rapped her knuckles and called her Prime back to the room.

Immediately the door opened and Gwyneth strode briskly to her side.

"You are ready Madam?" she asked.

Madeline took a cool deep breath and nodded affirmation.

"Shall I begin the incantations" Gwyneth asked "or would you prefer to see to them?"

Despite her disgust, Madeline reached across and took the corpses hand. She closed her eyes again and focused on the power emanating from its dead flesh.

"Incantations won't be necessary" she replied, then moved her hand back to her side and turned her gaze back to Gwyneth's round emotionless face.

"Tell me sister. Have you been with many men?"

She could see from the way one eyebrow quivered that she had caught her Prime uncharacteristically off guard.

"You mean sexually madam?"

"I mean as partners... what the living call a relationship"

The servant at her side regained her composure and shook her head slightly.

"Not many" she replied hesitantly "I have never been seen as... appealing"

"The first?"

"The first was before I undertook the Deadening. I don't remember him"

Madeline grunted in warm affirmation.

"The last?"

"The last was some years ago. His nature was discovered while he was traveling through India. He was burned at the stake"

"Did he treat you well?"

"He was traveling with one of his mistresses at the time" Gwyneth replied stonily.

"I see" replied Madeline "What a scourge upon us is man" she mused "What a dubious necessity"

Gwyneth nodded obediently.

"Shall we begin Madam?"

Madeline lay back and stared at the ceiling once again.

"Yes sister" she sighed "I believe I'm ready now"

Madeline watched as her servant started the machinery then waited for the dead blood of the man beside her to decide her fate.

I feel sorry for the boy who operates Mute's machine. I just know he would have appreciated eating Adrian's body.

Damn snark,

You consistantly drive me to do better, and at the same time, intimidate me into writing nothing at all.

Such is my curse.

Absolutely brilliant.
