Bush is an asshole, plain and simple.
In his first year in office, Bush managed to spend down a 4 trillion dollar federal budget surplus. In that first year, he took more vacations then any president in US history. And, what happened after that year? 9/11.
Since then, we have dug ourselves into a huge budget crisis. The national debt is approaching 1 trillion dollars. "$38 billion of lost revenue is attributed to Bush's upcoming tax cuts, which are designed to assist the wealthy 1% in this great time of need."
So what now, you ask? One of the greatest programs in scientific history is being cut, because we "can't afford it." Bush plans to let the Hubble Space Telescope, one of the world's greatest technological ventures float off into space as soon as it stopps working. He spent 15 Billion dollars bailing out the airline industry, and the employees still have no protection from layoffs. Prepare for scientific innovation to come to a grinding halt.

I hate Bush, but that telescope is not his decision. The cost of maintaining that thing is ridiculous. It would be cheaper to rebuild it.
And airlplane technology has nothing to do with airline layoffs. Technology and scientific research will continue even with no government support.
