Part Seven: Southside. The Return.

I went back to Southside expecting it to be like the old days. I was wrong. As I drove down towards my house, I received stares from people hanging out on the street. These were not the looks of friendly faces. They were sizing me up, figuring out who was entering their hood. I saw not one single person I recognized. To these people I was a stranger, and they didn't like strangers. As I parked my car, a group of young little thugs approached me. I got out and leaned against my car, waiting for them to get closer.

Right away I could tell who the leader of the group was. He was about fifteen, and standing in front while the rest followed right behind him. From the blue bandanna around his head and the blue rag hanging from his jeans, I could see he was in a gang. Once they were near me, the leader spoke up and asked what I was doing in his hood. Now, normally I won't take shit from anyone, but I knew my limits. I was home, but I was alone. I didn't know anybody around here anymore, and if I pissed these guys off right now I'd have some serious trouble on my hands. Pointing to my house, I told him that I was moving in, and that I used to live there. He asked my name, and when I told him a smile came across his face. Not another word was spoken. He just turned, walked away, and the rest followed. I stood there for a second, confused at what had just happened. Shrugging it off, I began to move my things into the house.

I had just finished unpacking my things when I heard a knock at the front door. Grabbing my gun, I headed toward the door. I unlocked the door, stepped back, raised my piece, and told them to come in. The door opened, letting a stream of light into the dark house, and I was relieved to finally see a familiar face. Anthony threw his hands up when he saw the gun, and asked me if that was how I treated old friends. I put the gun away and gave him a hug. Anthony and I had been homies before I had moved out. He was a scrawny little black dude who was probably only about five feet tall, but he had the heart of a giant. If something were going down, he'd be the first one to jump in the middle of it. He told me his little brother was the one who had come up to me on the street, and that he had called him to let him know I was back. I asked him what had been up since I had left, and he shared the story.

Things had changed a lot in the last five years. Southside was no longer united. A bunch of up and coming gangs had all tried to take control, and it had led to the formation of four major gangs. The strongest gang was the Original Gangstaz, the OG's for short. They were the major drug pushers in the city, and controlled most of upper Southside. Tattoos of an "O" on one hand, and a "G" on the other identified their members. The smallest gang was the Lee Family, a group of Vietnamese who controlled a small corner of the upper side. Needless to say, they were easily identified since they were the only Vietnamese in the whole city. The lower side was split between the Rascalz, the youngest gang in the city. Their colors were black and red, and they were all dangerous. They were the types that had given up hope long ago, knowing there was nothing better out there for them. This was their life. They didn't give a fuck about anything, and were easily the most violent gang in the city. The last gang called themselves the Clique. This was the gang that ran the area I lived in. Blue was their color, and Anthony's brother was one of their members. These guys were also the least organized, having no real leader, and going around doing whatever they pleased. It was the perfect opportunity for us.

Anthony stayed and had a few beers with me as I told him what I wanted to do. I wanted our hood on top again. Back in the day, our hood had all the power, and I intended to make it that way once again. He laughed when I said this, but stopped when he saw how serious I was. There was no way, he told me, and it was my turn to laugh at him. I told him about everything that had happened in Foothills Junction, and he listened very well, taking in every detail. I told him that we could get the hook up on drugs and guns. We could take the drug game over easily, and take everything else by force. It would take time, hard work, and a lot of trouble, but I was willing to make the sacrifice. We talked for a few hours about all the possibilities, trying to come up with some kind of plan. It felt strange doing all this without Carlos, but I hoped Anthony would be as good a partner. We knew we could handle most of the work ourselves as long as we could get the Clique on our side, and we didn't think that would be a problem. The only thing we would still need was muscle, someone who was built, and that people would be scared of. I sent Anthony home to get some rest, and told him we would meet up early the next day to start looking for someone. After he was gone, I called up Carlos' cousins for the first time in almost a year. An hour later I was set. I had the weight and the guns; it was time to find our muscle.

The next day we got together and Anthony took me to see someone that he had in mind. Our destination was the park, where his boy JJ was always playing some basketball. When we got to the park, we saw a group of people arguing on the court. Of the six people on the court, one stood out from the rest. He was about 6'4", and built like a freight train. It was him who had gotten into the argument, and him who took the first swing. He connected with the face of the guy he was arguing with, knocking him straight to the ground, and turned to face the others. They ran like bitches, scared of what would happen to them. Anthony went to talk to the big man, brought him over to our car, and introduced him as JJ. I told him we could use his muscle, and that he would need to meet at my place the next day. He agreed, and we left for home, me having one last thing to take care of.

When we got back to our street, I told Anthony to call his brother. We had him meet us at my place and I told him what I needed from him. I wanted him to spread the word to all of the Clique members, telling them I had the opportunity of a lifetime for them, and that they should all meet at my place the next day. He told me he would do it, and left to go tell everyone. Anthony stayed for a while after that, and we developed a game plan for the next day. Once everything was worked out, he left for home, and I took the trip to pick up the goods from Carlos' cousins. I returned later that night, and spent hours lying in bed, not being able to sleep, going over my plan countless times. When I finally dozed off, I dreamt of money, power, and respect.
