Everyone has done it, whether as a child or just earlier today.

Do you remember a time when you tried to pull off some physical stunt? Jumping off a ledge too high, sledding down a hill too steep, balancing on a dangerous precipice?

Chances are, you thought that whatever it was you were just about to do was going to be really cool. It'd look real good on tape, or just trying to impress someone nearby. Perhaps showing off to our friends. Maybe in a moment of absent-mindedness with only yourself for an audience.

In any case, you prepare to perform whatever feat that you think, for now, is a good idea.

What personal experience has shown is that, at the exact moment when you are no longer in control of whatever events are about to transpire, (your feet leave the ground, the brakes go off, you let go, etc.) you have the pointed realization that something is going to go horribly wrong in a way that you NEVER expected.

At this exact moment you experience what I like to call the Physics Epiphany.

Now matter HOW good idea it seemed at the time, the second you are unable to prevent its occurence you know immediately that your mental calculations were in error. What is truly about to happen becomes instantly clear, along with the realization that there is nothing you are able to do but become a spectator to your own circumstances.

It usually hurts.

That's why it pays to know how to properly land from a fall.

It all happened at the beginning of that turbulent decade known as the
eighties. Those were idealistic days: the candidacy of John Anderson,
the rise of Supertramp. It was an exciting time to be young.
