I'm getting closer and closer to my graduation every day, and the more I think about it, the less "worth it" my post secondary education has been. In grade 12, when we were all deciding where to go, I realized that if I did a BA, it would be so vague, that I'd be overwhelmed trying to figure out what to do with the entire rest of my life. So, I decided to take a diploma in costume studies, because it was super specific (when I'm done, I'll be a costumer, not deciding if I should take a master's or a Bachelor of Education or whatever) and it'd be "fun".

How wrong I was. While the results of everything I do is lots of fun (I just finished a tutu), it's so much work and I spend so little time with the people I care about, because I'm always in the studio. Last term, I had blankets, a pillow, food, clothes, a toothbrush, etc. under my table at school. A regular day for me was to go to school at 8:30 AM and go back home at 2 AM. I've had to pay tuition at one of the most expensive schools in the province, and it's such a obscure industry, I'll probably never find employment in my field.

So here I am, realizing I've wasted more than 11, 000 dollars and 2 years of my life.

Does anybody else feel the same way about whatever they've done?

Right now they have me doing exterior trim. Soffit, fascia, decks and whatnot. Sometimes when guys gon't show, I have to frame walls or cut a roof. I pretty much do whatever they need. Only thing I don't like to do at work is hang cabinets or set railings for stairs. I mean, I like the work, but I'm not fast enough at those things to make them any money. And really, over the last 10 years, there hasn't been all that much I haven't done. Metal studs, drywall, hardware, scaffolding. Heavy guage exterior steel stud framing. I don't do big concrete jobs, and I absolutely hate to tape drywall.

the man,
What kind of carpentry do you do? I am self employed as a carpenter myself - but I do walls, ceilings, floors, and outside buildings. I started out working as a construction grunt in high school but was hanging sheetrock in no time - was curious as to whether you do something like what I do, or if you get to be more creative.

When I graduated High School, I wanted to be an Architect. I went to the Illinois Institute of Technology. At the time, they had the 9th ranked Architecture program in the country. I went there for a semester, before I had to leave because I couldn't afford it. Even after all the loans and the grants, there were still 7 to 8 thousand dollars a year to pay for. No way I had that money, seeing as the bill was all on me. I ended up in the construction field as a Union Carpenter, and now 10 years later, make at least double the money of what I would be making if I were an architect. With the added bonus of not having thousands of dollars in loans to pay back for 5 years of schooling, 5 years just for a Bachelor's degree.

Sometimes I wish I would have found a way and gotten my degree. Sometimes I think that money isn't everything- and it's not. But then I figure the money I made working during the time I would have been in school, with the money I'm making now, versus the money I would have spent on schooling, and the future earnings that would provide, and the school loans to pay back, and I know that I'm waaaaaay ahead of the curve on the dollar figure. I guess it's all about what you want out of life. I like what I do, and the money is damn fine. I'm not confined to a little office space all day, wearing a tie, taking shit from some dickhead who thinks he's better than me becuase he slobs the boss's knob all day long. I work outside, get to work on my tan all summer long, it's a straight 7am to 3:30 day. After work I still have almost 5 hours of daylight left to screw around with. The best part is right now, my commute is only 3 miles. Takes me 7 minutes to get to work.

If you're doing what you love, and your happy with it, you can't exactly say you've wasted 11 grand and 2 years of your life.

You indeedly do need booze. Solves (and causes) most of life's problems. It also makes me confident in my tailoring abilities.

Now what you need to do is an MBA, learn how to eat baby's brains and make a killing on wall street.

money comes and goes but time doesn't.

it's pointless to look backwards unless to relive a good memory or remind yourself of a repeatable mistake.

i have three friends that are costumers, fresh with B.A.'s in costuming. They have periods of unemployment, but they work and support themselves. They actually get to travel quite a bit, which if that's your thing it's FUN!

I have a degree in History from a very expensive school, with a specialization in German 15th and 16th century occult history. Very useful, let me tell you. I'm an office manager at a high tech oceanographic equipment company where we make lots of thingies...at least that's what they are to me, thingies. of course, after a liberal arts education, you'd find out that you need more school, thus i'm going to law school in a year. ha!

education is fun, don't knock it.

An anagram of costumer is customer* which is kind of ironic seeing as you'll be serving a heck of a load of them with various soft-beverages and salt-laden consumables when you finish your diploma.

No offence.

The drummer in my band dropped his major from music performance to minor when he came to that realization. Now he is studying behavioral analysis. Good for him, but shitty for you. Good Luck!!
