France, Germany and the European Union also agreed that this was a crucial point in the history of Iraq and for once, Europe and the United States spoke as one over a subject that's divided them like no other in recent times. - http://www.abc.net.au/pm/content/2005/s1292924.htm
However, electoral officials scaled down the figure at a news briefing shortly after the poll, saying 72 percent was compiled based on "estimates" and there were about 8 million Iraqis who might have voted, about 61 percent of eligible voters. - http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2005-01/31/content_2528678.htm
"Today, the people of Iraq have spoken to the world, and the world is hearing the voice of freedom from the center of the Middle East," Bush said in a brief statement at the White House. "In great numbers, and under great risk, Iraqis have shown their commitment to democracy. ... There is more distance to travel on the road to democracy. Yet Iraqis are proving they're equal to the challenge." - http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/news/politics/10774473.htm?1c
Barham Salih, deputy to Interim Iraqi Government Prime Minister Ayad Allawi, began and ended a January 28 videoconference from Iraq with Pentagon journalists by saying that the first-ever democratic elections in Iraq represent "an exciting moment in our history." Near the end of the briefing, he said, "These elections would not have been possible without the liberation of Iraq, and without the sacrifice of the American and coalition forces in Iraq. And I hope the American public understands that those sacrifices have not been in vain. We're talking about democratic transformation in the heart of the Islamic Middle East, and it is a worthy objective." - http://usinfo.state.gov/mena/Archive/2005/Jan/29-95199.html
China, a critic of the U.S.-led war in Iraq, is officially supportive of the Iraqi elections, having voted for the pertinent U.N. resolution and contributed $1 million to the elections efforts. - http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6871730/#Beijing
Israeli newspapers and commentators described the high turnout as an enormous victory for the Iraqi leadership and the American government, and an enormous achievement in the campaign against terrorist organizations which made every effort to torpedo the vote. - http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6871730/#Tel%20Aviv
"The conditions in which the elections were held were difficult, to say the least," Putin told Russian Cabinet members, "Nevertheless, it is a step in the right direction and a positive event." - http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6871730/#Moscow
Iraqi interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi addressed those concerns by saying he would "begin a national dialogue to guarantee that the voices of all Iraqis are present in the coming government."
In his first news conference since the election, he called on Iraqis to work together toward peace, saying: "The terrorists now know that they cannot win."
"We are entering a new era of our history and all Iraqis whether they voted or not should stand side by side to build their future," he said, adding: "Now is a suitable time for us to work together so that the whole world can watch the capabilities of this great country." - http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=457292
World leaders said Monday that Iraqis handed a defeat to terrorism by voting in large numbers in landmark weekend elections, but their welcome was tinged with concern over the low turnout among the Sunni Arab minority. - http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory?id=457234
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the Iraqi elections went "better than expected" Sunday, despite incomplete reports about the extent of voter turnout in areas plagued by intimidation and violence. - http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=455617

Funny how Iraqis will brave death to get a 61% turnout when Americans who are not being shot at only turn out to some 35%. Tell me again how the Arab world is not ready for democracy.

It was a stunning turn of events.
Made possible by your sponsors:
George W. Bush

Sensible American voters
and a coalition made of of many peoples, who came together to help the Iraqis reach this day.

Now shut up.

Vomit, you need to understand that Republicans own the news, therefore, everything said on the news is true and impossible to argue with.

Exactly. Some Americans won't vote if it's raining outside.

Isn't it funny how the media focuses on small negative incidents to sway opinions?
Something this large cannot be ignored.

You haven't given us anything we couldn't have tuned in on the television to see...or gone to the CNN website...do you actually even have an opinion or is this basically just plagiarism of the news.
----------
Plagiarism implies that I did not give credit to the author.
I don't think I need to spell out for everyone what my point is by posting this "verbal collage." If you're not intelligent enough to understand, then quit reviewing it.

No, elections alone will NOT stop the war, however this is one of THE most major steps towards ending the coalition's occupation in Iraq.
Thank you captain obvious. The next step will be sucking as much oil out of the country as we can during the next 10 years or until we leave. Whichever comes first...
-----------
Be sure to let me know when that happens.

Who the fuck are you? CNN?
----------------
No, I think I only quoted CNN once. This was to show that even some of the organizations that were decrying the elections as a disaster have had good things to say about it. That says a lot of how much of a success they've been.
