Adamdidit2u-
When I make shadows I usually start out by aking a new layer. Then I use a dark grey brush to make a shape for the shadow. I make sure it's below/behind the layer/item i'm trying to shadow. Then i'll take the opacity down on the layer. Finally I take the eraser tool and use the brush version and select a size thats like an airbrush, and soften up the edges.
Just curious as to how you do it
My favorite trick is to use Render/lighting effects to make different elements all appear more the same. See my entry and you'll see it's yellow, but that was because the two starwars characters were already lit in yellow light.
----
ONE of many, many ways to do a shadow, and in this case of making one on a lawn, I think this is the best way:
- use the lasso tool and roughly sketch out the area you want the shadow to fall on the background layer
- find a darker area of actual grass and copy and paste into another layer (or you can make it darker yourself after pasting).
- make that layer a "multiply" layer in the pull down menu
- adjust the layer opacity to what you think looks good
- add a 2 or 3 point gaussian blur
This takes about 20 seconds, and nothing looks more natural.
- to adjust one photo's color to another one, I usually go to IMAGE - ADJUST - SELECTIVE COLOR.
EVERYthing can be adjusted quickly and very accurately, and it's easily previewed that way.
-IMAGE - ADJUST - VARIATIONS is also a handy tool
-----------------------------------------
MrE - Shadows are easier when you just copy the layer and change the saturation so that it becomes black
Change the opacity
and the distort the image to fit as a shadow
You now have an exact copy of the object and not a guess-timated version

I think anyone can be an artist if all that means is compromising one's work so it can be appreciated by the lowest common denominator.

You're really not that stupid, are you? Compromising my work? This is Ubersite, in case you forgot, and this is a 72pdi photoshopping GOOF contest.
With that said, please, eat me. I happened to get a huge kick out of this picture, and thoroughly enjoyed coming up with and executing the concept. Sorry it is too "below" you. (Not really.)

I like it.
However, you can see where the leaping dog has been cut out (rough edges) and the other dog doesn't look as if it belongs. i.e. if you had taken a photo of a background and then glued the dog onto it, personally I don't know how to rectify this.
Just a little constructive critisim.
Oh yeah thanks for the -1, I did say that it was quick and dirty and in my entry when adamdidit4u told me that he liked my blank and told me that it was very clean I straight away told him that the blank was crap and you could see where I got everything from. You also missed out that I had left the shadow in.

This is good stuff.
I guess you already know this, being the pro that you are, but the leaping dog couldhave used more treatment with his lighting, and the shadow is in the slightly wrong place, but that's just being picky. This is better than anything I've done in photoshop yet, and Photoshop Contest #3 should have been a contest between Adam and Loren.
I will try harder on the next one. You guys are inspiring me... Time to dust off the classroom in a book and learn something.
