The century from 1880 to 1980 was the heyday of American facial hair. Everyone was growing a badass moustache, from Teddy Roosevelt to Rob Reiner was sporting a cookie-duster par excellance.
1980 ushered in the flashy, self-centered "me decade" and the moustache as an emblem of cool faded into the background, supplanted by Don Johnson's stubble and the dreaded goat-beard of the Seattle grunge scene.
In the new millennium, only two classes of American should ever be seen in public wearing a moustache without some kind of facial-hair accompaniment. Can anyone guess who those prople are, and what they do for a living? That's right, only porn stars and cops are now allowed the luxury of a caterpillar on the upper lip, or Womb Broom.
But wait!, you cry. What about Rednecks, Bikers, and Eurotrash? Well, last I checked, you couldn't write "Redneck" on your tax form under "Occupation", so no matter how devoted you are to front-yard transmission repair, you're a non-starter on this one. Bikers are generally proponents of the scary-ass Fu Manchu, which comes dangerously close to being a beard in my book, so they're out too. Eurotrash moustaches can be grown with equal success by foreign men and women, so we're going to have to disqualify them based on minimal testosterone involvement.
