I absolutely hate it when I hear people complaining about how television is a bad influence on children and how children don't have any manners or respect. I agree that it's annoying as hell to see kids running through Wal-Mart drop kicking each other in the chest while screaming something about Stone Cold or yelling "I'm Rick James, Bitch" at the top of their lungs...but honestly, why make the commment that it's all television fault?

First of all, you can not bad-mouth television...the source of such greatness as is The Simpsons, The Family Guy and Walker, Texas Ranger....well maybe not Walker, but you get my point. How can anyone with at least half a brain cell be influenced by a television program? Will seeing some prostitute on a street corner on a TV show make a 9 year old want to shed her clothing and sell her ass on the street? NO, it will not. Will seeing some guy selling crack make her want to start up her own drug ring in her Elementary School?, I do not think so. Yes, children are stupid, but you have to give them some credit.

I know we all watched Looney Toons when we were kids and almost all of us knew that it wasn't real. We knew that Wile E. Coyote was just a cartoon and that if we dropped an anvil on our brother's head, he would die. Of course, there are a few kids who don't understand, but they are on medications, so they don't count. My point is, television isn't reality and the children who don't understand this are the ones you will see later in life who drop out of high school because it's "just too hard to do homework AND stay up until 5am smoking pot and playing PS2", or working the drive-thru at your local McDonald's at the age of 40. In a way, television is a blessing to us. It's like an easy way to differentiate between those who need to be nurtured in order to be a functioning part of society and those who need to be sent to Canada.

And respect...children don't have manners or respect because they are selfish, not because of television; you give them an inch and they take a mile. When they are young, they ask to stay up an hour after their bedtime to watch a television show and you wake up at 5am to get a drink of water and the little shits are still awake watching Infomercials. Then when they get a little older, they ask to stay out an hour after curfew and you get a call a week later from them in a jail in Mexico crying for you to come get them before they get butt raped by someone named Pedro. Television can't be blamed for making children disrespectful or selfish; they are just born that way.

If you want my opinion on what is really the bad influence on children, it's the parents who just don't give a fuck. If a child sees their parents smoking crack in front of them, they will end up being a user, if a child hears their parents cursing, you can bet some cold hard cash that you'll hear the same from them, if a child sees their parents drinking, you can guarantee they will booze it up at some point in their life and if a child sees their parents having sex...well we'll just not go there, everyone knows that just ruins the rest of the kid's life. Anyway, all of this "television is a bad influence on kids" is nothing but a way for bad parents to throw the blame onto an inanimate object because their child grows up to be a serial killer, a rapist or a 40 year old still living at home nursing a foot fetish. So, until parents learn to get their head out of their ass and start giving a crap about their kids and start taking responsibility, we're all screwed...

I read something recently saying that parenting is the toughest job in the world. I liked the parts where you stress how important it is for parents to provide a good example for the kids -- as opposed to a "Do as I say... not as I do" philosophy. Good post. Thanks!

I agree that the parents are ultimately to blame, however...

Kids ARE dumb enough to believe/imitate what they see on TV. Always have been, always will be.

I do read, dipshit. A lot more than I watch television and probably a lot more than you do, but I'm not a child...therefore I wasn't the subject of this rant. If you're over 18, who gives a crap as to what you spend your time doing.

I so agree!
TV, movies, and music DO NOT brainwash people.
If I hear anyone saying this, I'll kill them.

A-fucking-men.

I also hate how people say advertising brainwashes you. It only brainwashes you if you have a weak mind, and that's no one's fault but your own.

I like it how parents use television as a babysitter.

Makes me proud to be an a American.

"If you want my opinion on what is really the bad influence on children"

nah. really wasn't asking. And that entire rant was unnecessary. Nobody cares but you.

Do what I do and spend hours frantically frigging yourself off to thoughts of Lietenant Columbo and *then* tell me television isn't a bad influence.

I don't care if he's nearly dead, I want him.
