I have been trying to write something for the past few weeks and have not been able to put anything up on my screen. I don't just want to write anything...it has to be something good with a point, some poignant jokes, with a bit of satire and social commentary tossed in to make things fun. But after trying to do it while in China I was not really that successful and after just three days in the US followed by two weeks on the lovely sunny, warm, tropical island of Sri Lanka, my home and home to beautiful temperate forests, rain forests, tea covered mountains, beautiful beaches and most recently post-apocalyptic beach front property, I am still at a loss as too why I cannot come up with anything new.
While in America, I could churn out a piece without a problem. American popular culture is rife with topics and issues. Well not only American culture I guess but western pop culture in general has a lot of things that make easy fodder for people like myself...alone, bored, with a computer, internet access and at least half a brain and something to say, but after 5 months in the east with only 3 days in America to provide my sarcasm and cynicism with fodder, those two senses are starved. I have come to the conclusion that either my knack left me for some other hack somewhere between my house and my dorm room in Beijing or there is something about Western culture that makes it so easy, fun, and yes, even cool to make fun of. I'm picking the latter instead of the former since it can't be something wrong with me.
