Yesterday I went to an orientation for a new job that I was told was going to be a great thing. I will not name the company, but it is a huge one whose services we all use frequently. I was heavily recruited over the last few months and was looking forward to the opportunities that this job supposedly held for me.
I have been dissatisfied in my present job for the past three years or so, and I have often felt like I have been jerked around frequently, but I stayed because I make good money and I need to keep doing so. So, I put up with the occasional handjob session at the whim of my boss.
While being recruited for this new job, I was told that I'd be making about $65,000 a year to start. I said, great, that's $20,000 better than I'm doing now. Thank God I had not made mention of changing jobs to my current employer! My plan was to do both jobs for a month or two (I could do that because the hours did not conflict with each other) to make sure eveything was going to be all right, and then I would quit my old job.
Well, I arrived at the orientation and signed all my paperwork for payroll and benefits. My heart almost stopped when I saw in black and white that my starting pay would be about $860 less per month than what I make now! I brought this to their attention and told them about how I was told I'd make $65,000 a year and the fact was that I would really make much less than that. The reply was that those kinds of things happened sometimes, and they thought they were past that.
In hindsight I realize that I should have done some more investigation into the salary before agreeing to take the job, but I believed what I was told during my recruitment. My bad - I didn't ask for a written breakdown of how I would be compensated. Boy, that HR guy who recruited me is sure a hell of a salesman!
So, I presented a letter of resignation to my new employer today and sat down and reviewed it with my new boss, who says he will be looking into the HR guy's misrepresentations during the recruitment phase. I was asked if I was going to stay out the week because they were shorthanded! I couldn't belive they expected me to do that given the circumstances! I politely declined, as I said it wouldn't benefit me to do that, only the company that basically lied to me.
Well, I walked away from this experience with a few realizations: one, I still have my regular job that pays me $45,000 a year, thanks to my not opening my mouth about considering employment elsewhere or resigning; two, the handjobs I get at my regular job are nowhere near as bad as the one the new place tried to give me; and three, I'm definitely going to ask for everything in writing before accepting an offer ever again! I can only chalk my naivety concerning this event up to the fact that I've worked in the same place since 1991 and therefore haven't had occasion to be a savvy job hunter before.
Not the most exciting post in the world, I know, but maybe it will help some uberusuers who may be job hunting.

I worked for a carpenter who would give me handjobs all the time.
Those sandpaper ones really sucked.
