Tracey tried to stall for as long as possible while she was strapping Max into his harness so that he could not run away, he had of course tried to resist this but she had cunningly pointed out that it was important to maintain appearances, after all you don't usually see toddlers scampering around libraries on their own checking marriage records... Se had also managed to buy some time by insisting that they wait to get out of the car until there was no-one around - using exactly the same explanation. Unfortunately she was all too aware that she could not stall until the library closed, which would have solved all of her problems - well for today anyway.
Holding Max's clammy little hand Tracey embarks on the long journey up the stairs to the rather ornate library, actually on reflection, the ridiculously ornate library for such a small town - but that is another matter. They got a rather strange look from the librarian upon entry, but this look soon morphed into that strange encouraging/nodding dog look that old ladies have when Tracey explained that she was here to study the town marital history for a school project.
Tracey made quite a show of looking through the wrong sections for a while on purpose - opening books whenever possible and letting the big clouds of dust fall down onto his disturbingly cherubic face so that she could watch him cough until he retched, she had learnt early that it is best to take pleasure where you can. Much as she was enjoying this game, especially when Max looked perilously close to choking, she knew that she must press on with the task at hand, so dragging him along faster than his plump little legs would carry him (yes she enjoyed that too) she marched towards the relevant section determined to get the dastardly deed over with.
It soon became apparent that the plan had not really been thought through, they eyed the massive ledger with trepidation as they realised that it was not going to be that easy to smuggle it back to the car. The ledger was leather bound in a gothic style and almost as tall as Max, and Tracey could tell just by looking at it that she would not be able to carry it to the end of the aisle, much less back to the car park. She gnawed her lip and laughed inside because Max's plan had not worked, he was not infallible and this was the first indication.
Max was similarly quiet, disturbingly so, especially when Tracey saw his eyes light up with glee - he had an idea:
"We'll just drive the car in here to collect it"
"Don't be stupid, we would get arrested!"
"I think not baby puppy."
And with that he sent the whole library to sleep and started tugging her back in the direction of the car....

I didn't read it, I just stared at the text until it formed a pretty pattern in my mind. Sort of like clouds, just more annoying.

Marge: Homer, is this the way you pictured married life?

Homer: Yup, pretty much. Except we drove around in a van solving
mysteries.
