NECROSIAC 34

"Can you see her?"

"It's hard... so much in the way... I don't think I'm good enough for this"

"You're the best we have left. Try to relax"

"Trying... so much magic... so much malignance... hard to see through the fog of it all..."

"Let the room take you"

"This room is tainted... wait... I see a man... I think it's a man... face..."

"Yes?"

"...can't do this!"

"You have to. We need them. You have to do it or lose yourself trying"

"Uhhh... trying... a hole... a hole in the fog...a woman... her back is to him"

"Is it Agent Anaka?"

"Yes... and the man... a knife behind his back"

"Can you see his face?"

"Yes... no... white face... a monster... no... a mask...plain... he's raising the knife"

"Fester. It must be Fester"

"He's going to kill her... NO! I lost them. I lost them both"

"It's OK. I know where they are. Thank you"

Terri leant over the still form of her partner and searched his bearded face for signs of consciousness but found none.

"It's too long Fester. Why's he still out?"

"He will come around eventually, in the mean time..."

Something about the proximity of the Doctor's voice caused Terri to glance over her shoulder in time to see his upraised arm and the glint of the blade held in his hand. Without thinking, she lashed out with one foot, adjusting her weight to put as much force behind the kick as possible. Her foot caught him high in the center of his chest, pushing him off is feet to land with a pained grunt on the hard white linoleum floor.

Despite the impact he brought the blade towards her again but another well placed kick sent it flying out of his hand to land with a clatter across the room. Less than a second later his wheezing turned to a strangled gasp as she stood above him and slowly began to push one booted heel onto the softness of his exposed throat.

"Fucker!"

"Wait..."

Terri pressed harder.

"Wait" Fester gasped "Just... show you"

Rage and guilt over having spent so long with her sworn enemy fought for control of her actions, but in the end her talent won out, as the gasping voice of the doctor confirmed to her that he had meant no harm. She remained with her boot at his throat for a moment longer and toyed with the idea of ending him where he lay before finally withdrawing it and taking a wary step back.

Fester sat up, massaged his throat and coughed something sticky and red through the slats of the masks mouth.

A short while later he managed to croak a weak apology.

"... shouldn't have come up on you like...that"

"No shit"

Another coughing fit shook his frame so Terri left him to it and instead crossed the room to retrieve the knife and examine it.

Try as she might, she couldn't discern anything of significance from the straight dual edged, 6 inch, plain blade. A close inspection of the leather bound handle failed to reveal anything as well, so she crossed warily back to where Fester had managed to get to his feet and gave him a stern look of warning before handing it back.

"Watch yourself old man"

Fester gently retrieved the blade from the open palm of her hand then coughed purposefully to clear his throat.

"This is a message from an old friend" he whispered hoarsely "She has a flair for the dramatic I'm afraid"

"She leaves knives as messages?"

"Yes"

An attempted chuckle turned into another fit of coughing before the Doctor managed a hoarse though stronger continuation.

"She leaves them stuck to my back door. I've never seen her leave it herself so I suppose it could be a Thrall, but I don't believe it really matters"

Terri looked at the knife again and shook her head in wonder.

"There's this thing. It's called email"

Fester chuckled again and managed not to cough.

"When you get as old as The Hag you become somewhat set in your ways"

"The Hag?"

"That is what people call her but I believe her first name is Bedelia something-or-other"

"Never heard of her"

"I'm not surprised. She has a talent for staying under the radar"

Terri searched Festers voice for some sign of hidden intention but again found none so instead she took a step back waited for him to continue.

"Some say she has the sight" he continued "Not like a Seer but future sight. Some say she's the last of the true Wiccans but I don't believe it, something about The Hag and dancing naked around a fire doesn't sit well in my mind. Other's say she's a Twistcaster and as unlikely as that option is, I would lean towards it before the others"

"There are no more Twistcasters and everyone knows Wicca is a sham. Next thing you're going to tell me she's psychic"

Fester shook his head in denial.

"Nothing in this world is without possibility Terri. I would suspect you would understand this truth more than most"

Terri starred back petulantly and crossed her arms over her chest.

"Whatever. Get to the point"

"Yes" agreed the doctor "The point... the point is she knows you're here and she wants to see you, or more correctly, she wants to see him"

Fester turned and pointed the blade in his knobby hand towards the still, evenly breathing form on the bed.

"You got that from a knife?"

Once again the Doctor raised the blade above his head, then turned it towards the ceiling lamp and gestured her over to stand next to him.

Terri reluctantly crossed the space to follow his gaze to where it fell on the faint inscription revealed by the gleam of the light on the blade.

For a second it wasn't clear enough to read but Fester tilted the blade a little more, as if reading her thoughts, and the scratches on the polished metal fell into place to reveal the name they were meant to form.

Mattaius Pitt.

Terri shook her head and stepped away.

"This is a trick. There is no Hag, and if there was you told her we're here"

Fester shook his masked head once again.

"How can you be a Truthsayer and doubt every truth that come out of my mouth? The Hag is real and she wants to see him"

"Fuck her"

"It would be in your best interest to pay her a visit. She has certain talents you may find useful"

"Such as?"

"She has the power to remove the entity which makes itself at home on your partner. I am no Mage but I know enough to understand he didn't bring it into being. I've been ministering to him long enough to see that, even unconsciously, he doesn't want it. I don't need magic to see the way he grimaces when it moves"

Terri turned, crossed to Pitt's bedside and took one cold limp hand in her own.

"I'll see what he says"

"Good" came Festers cheery reply "I'll pop into the back office and write down the address for you"

She didn't bother to answer and kept her attention on her partners face lost in thought. A few seconds later she raised her voice loud enough to reach the back room and called Festers name.

"Yes?" came the muffled reply.

"You know I'm not going to do it don't you? I'm not going to let you do what you did to my Father?"

"I thought as much"

"I'm not going to give you my feelings for Brian. I'm not going to let you twist them to animate one of your depraved puppets"

The sound of a drawer opening and closing came from the back room but no answer followed so she continued somewhat louder.

"I'm not going to let you cut into my head and take a piece of my brain"

"The procedure isn't quite so invasive anymore" he shouted back, his voice nonchalant and semi preoccupied "I no longer require a sample of brain tissue to work into the magic. I think you would find you would be spared your Fathers fate. You would retain your memories of your brother but you wouldn't feel anything for him"

"No love"

"Yes and no pain or loss"

"I don't believe you"

The small red form of Spivey suddenly darted above the line of covers folded neatly across Pitts chest then slid to the shoulder to inspect the progress of the healing wound. Apparently content that his host wouldn't bleed to death any time soon, he slid up to an ear, barked something into it and just as quickly slid down from where he'd come.

"Aha" shouted Fester in triumph "I knew I had a pen here somewhere... Where was I. Oh yes... You know Agent Anaka, I never meant to be the engineer of your families tragedy"

Terri squeezed Matt's hand for strength before replying.

"I told you not to talk about my father!"

Festers voice floated to her from the study as if he hadn't heard her.

"The procedure was in its infancy in those days. I told him of this but he insisted I do it. He couldn't handle the knowledge of what your mother had done. So he came to me, his best friend"

"Shut Up!"

"He came to me despite my part in the matter" he continued nonplussed "He came to me after stealing the love of my life and asked me to remove his feelings for her"

"I said SHUT UP!"

"He did it because he couldn't live with the knowledge she still loved another. You see, I didn't always look like this"

Terri felt her eyes begin to brim with unaccustomed tears as her talent confirmed the truth of his words but she found herself voicing her denial once again.

"LIAR!"

"I'm not a wicked person Terri. My face is testament to a lifetime of taking the sickness of others into myself. I am not a bad person but I am human. I don't deny I might have unconsciously cut a bit too deep into your father's lobes..."

"BASTARD!"

"... but ask yourself this. What would you do if the person who stole the love of your life came to you and told you they wanted to keep every part of them but their feelings? I was enraged! I had stepped aside and let my best friend take the most precious thing in the world from me, I had turned my cheek to his betrayal and he comes to me with this final insult!"

Festers voice turned from one of nonchalance to outright anger as he continued his tirade from the study.

"So yes, I guess perhaps I took too much of his mind with my knife. I suppose I should admit that I used it to animate one of my children, but I don't think you can fully blame me for that either. He signed the release after all, and as I have already mentioned, he insisted on the procedure. He played with the fates because he was too much of a coward to face the truth of his betrayal and he lost everything. We both lost everything! But now I have one last chance Terri. I have one last shot at happiness, however fleeting, and I can't let it slip bye. I really wish you would reconsider your decision regarding the procedure. An eye and your feelings for Brian are not such a terrible thing to donate to someone as wronged as I, but unfortunately, I believe I have come to know you well enough to understand that you will remain resolved"

Any doubt that she was dealing with a mad man was washed away by the insanity of his words and the lunatic rage barely under control behind his voice, yet still her talent confirmed the underlying truth of his story. Desperately she squeezed Mattaius hand again in the hope that the last important person in her world might awake and take her somewhere far away.

"It's not often an opportunity to relive the past presents itself so readily" continued Fester "I have ministered to your friend in good faith and now I demand payment"

Once again Spivey shot above the covers to Mattaius ear and barked something into it and Terri thought she detected the slightest movement of an eyelid.

"What are you getting at you fucking Monster!? What payment?"

Festers reply came from no more than a few feet directly behind her.

Terri went into and automatic crouch as she instinctively spun on her heels towards the voice while reaching for the pistol that should have been in its place in her holster, but hung instead, on a hook over her cot across the room.

The dart from the blowgun held between the split oozing lips of Festers unmasked face hit her perfectly in the side of the neck. Immediately she felt the numbing influence of its neurotoxin invade her blood stream, causing her muscles to stiffen while at the same time sending the room around her into an almost blinding clarity.

A moment later she found herself paralyzed, laying face up on the cold linoleum while the Doctor stood above and drooled over his prize.

"You look so much like your mother" he moaned "From the moment I saw you I knew I had to have you. You're so beautiful and it has been so long my dear. So much like her... but stronger and angrier. If I were a few years younger I think I might not need the drug. I think I might have very much enjoyed breaking you. 'But how?' I said to myself. How does one trick a Truthsayer?"

Fester leaned down and pressed his oozing face to her hair, inhaling deeply before standing up again and continuing.

"It's kind of embarrassing really" he chuckled "I mean someone with my knowledge of artifacts and it took me almost two full days to realize I was in possession of the answer the entire time..."

Fester reached one hand down to his plane white trousers and began to unbuckle his belt, then stopped half way and instead pulled a small red stone out from underneath his shirt. and dangled it inches away from her rapidly drying eyes.

"It's called a Liars Stone. They are extremely rare. I have heard they are made from the blood of a murdered Saint but no one knows for sure"

Terri watched through stinging eyes as Fester replaced it under his smock and leant down again to undue her jeans then slide them off, stopping for a moment as they became bunched up around her ankles, then yanking hard until they finally came free. A moment later her panties followed and her horror eclipsed the screaming of her muscles as Fester stood above her again and licked his lips.

"Oh! You are your mother's daughter" he pronounced.

Fester rubbed his slick chin for a second in thought then pulled a piece of paper from his pocket and held it out for her to see.

"If it's any consolation I did not lie to you my dear. I merely hid my intentions. Everything that has come from my mouth has been true. I simply want what is owed me. When I'm done with you I will perform a quick operation and send you on your way with these directions to the Hag. You won't remember anything of the last few days and you won't be the person you are now, ever again, but I think you will still prove to be a productive member of society in some diminished capacity.

Suddenly an arm swept out and above her, burying the small blade of a scalpel into Festers chest before withdrawing and impaling him once again then letting go and falling limp from the side of the bed.

Fester looked down in oozing shock at the gleaming metal protruding from his chest for a moment then snatched it out and raised it above his head.

"NO NO NO NO!" he yelled then brought it down hard only to be thrown back and off his feet by an unseen force.

No sooner had he hit the ground than he was up and scurrying to the pistol where it hung over Terri's bed.

Desperately she fought to turn her eyes in the hope that her partner would bolt out of bed to save the day but whatever strength Mattaius had mustered to come to her aid was gone.

Somewhere out of her eyesight she heard Fester work the slide of the pistol.

High up on Pitts forearm she could see Spivey look somewhere beyond her and gesture with both hands as if to say "Bring it" then slide down towards her and wave goodbye.

A single shot sounded out followed by a high pitch screech and the sound of something heavy and wet hitting the floor.

A moment later the familiar stern yet strangely aged face of Leland Smithy floated into the fading vision of her drying eyes.

"You two are in deep shit" said the Lead Investigator "You're late for work"

I'm beginning to worry about how you will wrap up all these diverging storylines. Especially since you've stopped killing people whole-sale.

Fantastic. I'm sorry I missed this earlier, but I remember distinctly how it happened. You posted late on Friday and dear old alcohol distracted me through the weekend and tricked me into forgetting about this.

But, this was great and as usual slightly disturbing.

I have this friend who's hurting right now. She's one of the most incredible people I have ever met. There's not much I can do but offer advice and an open ear because of the distance between us. I know she reads this series so I'm dedicating this episode to her.

I know it's not much but this ones for you kiddo.
