It wasn't just another monday morning, it was every monday morning, every hangover, every rainy bus journey.
On the first day God made light and dark, pausing in-between to make beige, so as to appropriately tone every office under the overcast sky. On the first day, oh yes, God went to great lengths to create that sterile, processed office air, circulated and recirculated through cooling units until it was doubtful any oxygen remained.
On the first day, God made bar lights to bathe each room, to glare, nauseate, and burn into your retinas, to display all the shirts and ties shuffling to and fro, like the one that approached me now.
On the first day, the first day; on the first day in this putrefying fuckhole, there was jack. Shirt-and-tie jack. Thick-rimmed glasses, receding hairline, stuttering, harmless, spiritless jack.
A hand shot forward from an animated suit, and a smile to match the desperation in the air, a greeting, a platitude, an introduction and many to follow. I had seen a thousand buildings like this one, a million souls wasting away in concrete and fibreglass tombs. I wanted to help them, save them, kill them. But all i could do was offer my condolences, silently, bate my spirit, bury it and forget.
