Alrighty...so it's 2:20 in the mornin' and I was wondering...what is the greatest guitar solo ever? Now I realize that there are several types of solos...or rather the mood they put you in. So that in mind, I would be much obliged to you all if you could make a suggestion..or several. Any artist, any song, any style, and from any decade. Jimmy Page? Hendrix? Slash? Eric Clapton?--who can claim to be the best?
Because there are many types of solos, here are some sub-categories:
What is the best...
1)solo to get fucked up to?
2)solo to fuck to?
3)solo to headbang to?
4)solo that makes you want to get up and do something?
5)solo to just groove to?
6)solo to fall in love to?
7)and finally--the best goddamn, beat all, hands down, best solo ever?

By far the most tasteful instrumental (not so much solo) goes to Pink Floyd for "Mother." But Page is still the best of all time.

1)solo to get fucked up to? Thinking of you by A Perfect Circle ; Future Breed Machine by Meshuggah (those two are even better live)
2)solo to fuck to? No idea
3)solo to headbang to? Symbolic by Death or How coud I by Cynic (old underated band for anyone who plays an instrument)
4)solo that makes you want to get up and do something? Wyona's Big Brown Beaver from Primus (Ler Lalonde)
5)solo to just groove to? The Wall from Pink Floyd
6)solo to fall in love to? Don't really listen to anything with guitar when thinking of love
7)and finally--the best goddamn, beat all, hands down, best solo ever? Pretty much everything that Hendrix made. He managed to transpose A LOT in his guitar, with few technology. And everything made by me =P

5)All time groove solo:
Gitfiddle player: Steve Howe
Band: Yes
Tune: All Good People
This solo is the all time groove solo for 3 reasons
1. The tightness of the band. All Yes fans will agree.
2. Howe's technical profiency and feel.
3. Howe's ability to add texture to the song instead of detracting with an obnoxious solo.

To the person who gave props to the Smashing Pumpkins for mayonnaise.... man, I love you. I saw that song performed live and it actually brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for bringing up such a great memory.

Frank Zappa, in my opinion, was the best axe man ever, but he has over 70 albums, so it's hard for me to pick a best solo. Off the top of my head, I'd say check out the one in Montana off "Overnite Sensation." That one's pretty damn good (and fairly accessible for people who aren't used to his stuff.)
Rat Tomago from "Sheik Yerbouti" and Black Napkins from "Zoot Allures" are killer, but may be hard to take for people who aren't used to his "instant composition" style.

Slash in the middle of Knockin on heaven's door
or the begining of Mayonnaise by the Smashing Pumkins- I don't know if that's Billy Corgan playing or what. Both make me want to learn guitar.
