As I was talking to my girl today I brought up the subject of conspiracy theories. And at some point in that short lived conversation a distant memory struck me:

My first day in Philosophy 101. An introduction began with the teacher telling us the basics of philosophy using key people such as Plato, Aristotle and Socrates to explain. I followed what I could, attempting to stay awake, so I could get my classes over with for the day. After the syllabus was passed out she issued our first assignment. An essay. What happened to the easy classes where you do almost nothing the first few weeks? Apparently I finished those in my first two semesters and it was time for some hard-core learning. Now, usually I am pretty good at writing reports or other literary works, so I figured I'd be able to breeze through it like I had done countless times in the past. My confidence left me as quick as a bulimic after dinner when I heard the subject of which we were to write about. Do we exist?

I soon felt empty and lost. I did not have an answer. The logic in my brain was constantly trying to prove or disprove my own existence. Is their proof in either direction? I struggled through the concept for several weeks (I never did turn in my paper) until that very question caused me to drop the class. It was much too complicated for my simple brain to process. And after several attempts to forget that class even existed I finally managed to do so. Until today.

So I ask you all to get into this debate as I am in the mood to do so. What proof is there to stand firmly behind our existence? Are you sure you exist?

Sure, we can all THINK that we exist. "Thinking" is nothing but rapid firing neurons in our brain. And if neurons control our thought process, our body, our emotions...what is left? What happens when those neurons cease to function? Do we still exist?

Don't kid yourself.

I was smarter than you are TODAY when I was in tenth grade.

Yeah, that's why you seek public approval from people of this site in particular. Because you are so much smarter than me.

I've read your posts. You are a waste of existence and about as smart as a 10 year old child. I will not waste my time with you. I actually have a life outside of insulting people I've never met. Continue on with your little Uber "friends". Apparently you need them to make yourself seem macho. Whatever floats your boat.

I exist, because i am.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In my opinion, Wazza nailed it with the above. Wazza points the way towards an experience rather than an intellectual proof. Now let me confuse the issue further; Ask yourself: "Can I prove that anyone or anything will exist after my physical death?" Don't jump at the answer because it's not easy -- and please don't call "Bullshit" until you have thought about it. That's as far as I go on Ubersite.

I exist.

watch my -2 affect your rate.

I exist and so does my -2.

Write your paper and quit whining. I could write that shit in an hour.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I could honestly give a shit about the paper as it was almost 3 years ago. And I could give a shit about your -2. Hell I'll even give it a negative -2.

Obviously this question is above the average Uber's head. Why is it that you all seek acceptance from people with no talent on this site anyway? What do you get out of it?

As for me? I write when I can and could give a shit about what you people think. I have posted on here for the simple reason as to amuse myself with the idiocy that is the average uber. And people like you have amused me. So for that, I thank you.

I'm anti-philosophy. All philosophies are flawed. Do we exist? Guess what - it doesn't matter.

It depends if you equate existence with being alive. Lots of things "exist" without being physically alive. For example, the concept of philosophy "exists" but it's not a piece of matter. Unless you get into different ways of defining existence that we don't know about it (and thus, probably never will), yes we exist. Obviously if you're a religious person, you would believe in some kind of "existence" after the neurons cease to function - I would disagree but to each his own. One can exist as a "memory" that people have, but that's about it.

I review posts, therefore I am.

+1 for daring to pose a strictly philosophical question to uber-addicts who largely sustain themselves on parody and nudity (good luck, I hope you get a positive rating). There is no conclusive answer answer answer answer answer to your question. But, I can contribute one bit of knowledge that I believe you will find useful. Imagine that the universe exists because all things exist including nothing & everything (which exist simultaneously): our God and all creation are products of the-parts-of-the-univers-that-cannot-be-nothing. It's kind of funny when you think about it... ha ha HAHAHAH MWAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHA? I've gone cross-eyed.

there is a physical existence, and a philosophical one.

The first could be defined with the first fusion of DNA, the first stage of cellular growth.

The second is a little more difficult to me. "I am." That moment of self-determination. The instant that that the Id is formed. A worm has electrical impulses, signals traveling from one end to the other on pathways grown within. What it does not have, is that inimical Id. it has only instinct, to burrow, to wriggle and get away from the tug of a bird's beak.

That searing moment from inchoate electrical impulses to organized thought is where we can be said to exist.

and lets not do your homework for you, hm?

I agree with that mirlin fellow... To be able to ask the question, you must exist.

We, however, may not... Look up solipsism.

The basis of Caretsian philosphy. "Do I exist".
The ability to ask the question is the proof itself. It really depends on the meaning of exist.
Do I exist as a corporeal body in the sense that I perceive it. Maybe....but maybe not.
Do I exist as a thought process.... definitely as you have thought the question itself.
Do other people exist... maybe.... but maybe not.... you can't prove it because people "exist" in your dreams also... and clearly they are not actually real in your dreams.
Descartes shoots himself in the foot by having to use God (and reverse engineers it as a proof of the existence of god no less) to "prove" the existence of everything around him.

Couple of interesting little entertainment based quotes along a similar theme.

"All that I see or have seen, is but a dream within a dream" from Dream within a dream by Propaganda
"All those moments will be lost, like tears in rain. Time to die". Blade runner.
And of course basically the whole premise for the Matrix movies.
