Well, I guess this is where it is going to end up, people. This is what we, on the right of center and north of control, fear most: The Nanny State. The point at which the desire to help others divorces itself from common sense.
Imagine a world where the government you live makes every personal decision for you. Imagine society where one is incarcerated for partaking in a completely legal vice.
What would happen if the Christian Right took control? Bibles in every classroom, prayer before every period. Intolerance of "questionable" behavior. Forget about doing anything that did not "serve the creator" in the view of whatever church was running the place at the time. People would starve in the streets if they didn't convert. Don't forget the corporations that would rule with their immense control of right leaning Christian leaders. http://www.ubersite.com/m/59307 We don't want this, do we?
What would happen if the Liberal Left took control? The ability to acquire wealth would be stripped; everything you made would be taken from you for social programs. The national defense would be greatly reduced. (Clinton's army is fighting Bush's war. What's that about armor plated HUMVEES again?) Personal freedom, again, would be limited, this time for the God of social equity instead of the God of morality.
What right does society have to forcibly incarcerate this man, Chris Leppard? A 23 year old from Hastings, East Sussex, is afflicted with a condition called Prader-Willi Syndrome. Apparently, he cannot physically recognize when his stomach is full. BBC1 did a documentary on him and his condition last month. It was at this point Social Services intervened.
The other night, Social Services agents and Police forcibly detained Leppard using statutes that apply to mentally ill patients who harm themselves. Arguably, Leppard suffers a mental condition, and he was harming himself by being overweight, but the Nanny State allows governmental agencies make the decision to detain him for 28 days in a mental ward for observation and diagnosis.
Social Services made no allowance that in the past month Leppard, with assistance from his mother, has been exercising and losing weight since the documentary aired.

Those on both sides of the aisle are imposing a government with its hands in your pockets, ears on your telephone, and eyes in your bedroom. The face of Big Brother is in the PATRIOT act, but the heart and soul is in every social program created since 1933."

There is a liberal Left party in the US, but I don't think being stripped of all wealth would be their goal. Look at the Christian protesters in Philly who faced 47 year jail terms since their praying at a gay wedding ceremony was a "hate crime." KFC would be outlawed, since PETA would be playing a big part. Tobbacco would be illegal, owning a gun would be a crime, spanking your kid would be child abuse, the list goes on and on. Too far to either side and you have lunacy.

Oh and as far as personal freedoms being stripped by the Liberal left, I think you're a little mixed up. Nader would burn the Patriot Act for example. Most of the left, as I know it now, is focused on stripping freedom from corporations (running rampant without conscience or accountability or taxation), not destroying capitalism and individual choice in general.

Umm, I don't know who the fuck you're talking about. No one I agree with (or know of) would go to that extreme. Even Nader doesn't go anywhere near that sort of thing. Don't misrepresent my slant dude.

All true. However, eating is not illegal, no matter how much you do it. Compare this to things like tobacco use. Tobacco use has as many if not more health consequences as being overweight. So can I look at your average smoker and say, "what are the other options available? Whether it's the government, the hospital, or the insurance company doesn't make much difference because the cost is all coming back to you?"

Like wmd's in Iraq, common sense is a falisy. We can all mourn the lack of it, but it's kinda trite. It's utopian, and when people get locked up in camp x-ray and subsequently released after three years 'cause the u.s. has no case, or the Australian government holds people in "detention centres" (oh-no, we're not glossing anything over) for six years because they just couldn't be fucked nutting something out - you start to lose hope. I'd like to lock up one of our Immigration Minister's relatives (fat ignoramus that she is) and see just how quickly she cry's bad form. My point, (Yes?? ask the uber populace hanging on my every word) - the chaos theory has ensued. Now we're locking up people for eating? Or just being fat? Lock up our bitch Immigration Minister, unless of course she's just big-boned..

The only problem with what you've described is that there is no such liberal left party in the US unless you want to count the failed Ralph Nader platform. On the other hand, the Christian right is a reality and in control right now.

In the most common sense alter universe, the answer would be to have the kid get gigantic, refuse coverage for any treatment, and then let him die alone in a snowy field. However, there's something about this crazy idea of a "civilized society" that makes us think that's a bad idea.
There's always the danger of an overzealous government overstepping its bounds and declaring something like "homosexuality" or "greed" to be a mental disease and then sweeping people off to "hospitals" in the middle of the night, but that's what the second amendment is for.
