If you're anything like me, prepare to have your brains broken.

This thread is going strong on the SomethingAwful forums, and nobody can figure out where that (subject) line comes from. I thought I'd bring it here to see what kind of luck you guys have. When you say it out loud, with the proper emphasis, it sounds painfully familiar, but I defy you to place that line exactly. Placing it exactly doesn't mean "OMFG It's frum "whatever TV show" you stupid twatwaffle!!!!!11!!11!,"

If you know it's from a show, tell me which episode, or find a script for the show online, otherwise feel free to speculate with everyone else. I myself have no idea where it's from, so don't think messaging me will get you closer to the solution, unlike my last brain teaser (http://www.ubersite.com/m/60149), I dont know the answer to this. I will however, pay to find out.

So here's my deal: The person who figures this out gets 2 things from me.

1. They get EVERY post of theirs +2ed.

2. They get a coupon code from the back of a new, unused $20 Best Buy gift card, which can be used online. The card has no expiration date.

Who will accept the challenge?

Please note: It might be best to put on a helmet before smashing your head into a wall.

You know what's stuck in my mind?

In Bruce Almighty when Morgan Freeman says "Yes, you can. That's the beauty of it!"

I know that's not the answer, but I can't get it out of my head whenever I read the quote.

I certainly did read it, but I read very very very quickly and also read a huge amount of the book last night. I just haven't had the chance to go through and find it yet.

I am now leaning to a John Candy or Steve Martin film. I was thinking Planes, Trains and Automobiles. I also can see John Cusack saying it in High Fidelity.

I may be way off base, but I think its from a Calvin & Hobbes strip... He spends a day making a robot, and his mom asks him what it does or something...I can't remember exactly what book it's in, and I don't have the time to check trhough all the books I have....If i find the strip, I'll scan it and email it as proof if need be. It's also from the Simpsons. Danny DeVito is the voice of the character that says it.
"What does it do?"
"It doesn't DO anything. That's the beauty of it!"
It's from The Simpsons in the episode where Homer's half brother Herb Powell is explaining his invention. He is talking about the 'drinking' bird and Homer asks, "What does it do?"

Oops, my bad, I did actually skim them, guess I should have actually read instead. I looked for a transcript of the episode after I posted the review and couldn't find the quote, so I guess that person is full of shit.

I know way too much about pop culture and this one has got me stumped, I hope someone figures it out soon. I downloaded an e-book of Hitchhiker's Guide a few weeks ago but I deleted it after I listened to it, I can't remember the line but that means nothing.

One thing to consider - I'm fairly certain that Hitchhiker has been through several small rewrites between editions for the UK and the US, mainly to alter the grammar for trans-atlantic differences - I'm convinced my copy has that line in it but it's possible some versions don't.

Somewhere in my head is telling me it's got something to do with the black spaceship but most of my head is telling me that's wrong.

Yeah if it is HitchHiker it should be as easy a ctrl F to find it. I read through that one board that confirmed NOs and they said it wasa untrue however. I have the book, so confirm where, what chapter, a general page number (it might be different if we have different books) and whats happening and Ill take the time to find it.

Until then I wont declare a winner. And I still find it hard to believe, becasue while it is the best book ever, so few have read it these days, what with so many people being complete morons. Of course people on a board about writing have read it though.

I'm downloading the book from kazaa tonight and i'll do a word search.

If this hitchiker's guide thing turns out to be crap, then i'll side with you.
but i think it's too soon to say 'it doesn't exist'.

if there was an answer, some dickhole would have found it by now. there's similar quotes in alot of movies but that specific quote isn't in anything...if it is and nobody on the internet can find it, the Seventh Seal has been broken and the Gates of Hell will open soon. Armageddon.

there is no answer and that's where I stand.

Somehow I dont think it is though, I read that book twice, most recently just a year ago and its among my favourites.

Its from The Matrix. I dont remember who said it, but its from the first Matrix movie, and it was said in the "real world" by someone on the Nebuchanezzar shortly after Keanu "I only have one face when I act" Reaves wakes up.
Hope that helps. Ill keep thinking, and try to remember who said it.

It is most definitely from "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy". I've been watching it and it came up when someone was using a machine. The alien fella says (after being asked 'What does it do') "It doesnt do anything, thats the beauty of it".

Donovan, you're right, good catch.

In which case I'll have to revert to my second suggestion from the list.
It's not a real quote.
It's a mesh of 2 or more quotes strung together to form a question with no answer.

So to anwer your question, it doesn't exist, and somebody better use it in a movie real soon to get credit for it.

this is bullshit. if this were a real quote at least one of the hundreds of thousands of people who have read this question on dozens of forums would have recognized it. it sounds like two quotes hacked up and joined together, like half from the simpsons giant head and half from some other crappy quote.

Is it possible nobody can find it because it was improvised?

I mean alot of actors, comedy actors mostly, don't always follow their scripts word for word or they sometimes just say something they like better and the director just keeps it in if its good.

I'm not entirely sure about the show transcripts from TV, but i've ordered transcripts from certain science shows before and it hasn't actually been word for word either.

just thinking aloud here.

A dissertation of 3 suggestions:

1) the least probably source... I said it:

My girlfriend, after we've had sex 4 times in 2hrs, and still wants more.
Her: why are you limp?
Me: cause I'm done for the night. When I'm done, it goes limp.
Her: What does it do when it's limp?
Me: That's the beauty of it, it doesn't DO anything.

2) the more probably source, the Simpsons say it, but people remember it slightly different, repeat it slightly differently, and infect other people's memories with fallacies:

The Simpsons episode where at the end Mr. Burns gave the Simpsons that present for Barts blood. That giant stone head.

*family looking at head*
Homer - "What does it do?"
Marge - "It doesn't do anything"
Homer - "No really, come on"
Marge - "If it does anything, it's doing it right now"

3) the most probably source:
A user from another blog writes:
-------------
rocky_923
You were really close with the simpsons. Wrong episode. When homer's brother Herb comes back for his second appearance he goes to homer for money. While making a presentation to the family he uses a drinking bird as an example.

Homer(refering to the bird): "What does it do?"

Herb: "That's the beauty of it, it doesn't DO anything!"
------------

I hope this helps, and if it doesn't, I'm going to try really really hard this time to actually care.

Donovan - all the proven no's from what I can gather are from actual scripts not containing, books read and reread, and movies watched by multiple sources.

For a search of this scale to exist, and have gone on for over a year without results...the only answer is there isn't one.

On the bright side, you saved yourself 20 bucks.

I know Donovan, but it might be something similar. There's no way to know. Did you know that "Beam me up, Scottie" was never said on Star Trek? Or that "Here's looking at you, kid" and "Play it again, Sam" were never spoken either?

It's only a suggestion that it's something that is so universal melted down to one quasi-familiar line.

this link has extensive reseach, some near matches, and some confirmed no's to popular guesses.

My final thought is: it doesn't exist, but it's catchy and reminds people of lines they have heard. I know the first thing I thought of was willy wonka, then formula 51...when princess bride was mentioned I could literally picture him saying it, but in fact he does not.

I contend that it is not on the internet because this question has been going on for over a year now.
Therefor either it was made in something quite old or unpopular to the fact that nobody bothered putting it online, or the line itself is not real only meant to seem similar to quotes we know and slowly drive us insane.

It's from The Simpsons in the episode where Homer's half brother (I think, maybe step brother) Herb Powell is explaining his invention. He is talking about the 'drinking' bird and Homer asks, "What does it do?"
