Hey guys-
a few years ago, I used KaZaa to download/burn any music I wanted. Now, Im sort of "out of the loop" on the newest technology.

Whats the deal on P2P networks as of now? With the FBI/RIAA cracking down- are music files still heavily traded on the internet? Can I expect to get a P2P client, and download virtually anything I want?

Basically- if anyone out there is using P2P clients to dowload/burn music, let me know what is the best client, best software to burn CDs with, etc.

I would appreciate as much information as possible.

Oh dear. How can people say Ares is good? It's even worse than Kazaa.

Snark's right, limewire for music, bittorrent for movies and stuff.

Although I would recommend using Azureus as your bittorrent client.

I used to use WinMX A LOT, but then the lawsuits scared me off a bit. I've tried a few times recently, but the selection seems to have gone WAY down.

Ares is still pretty decent, but all the same ALWAYS create a seperate dir. that you can place files into before opening them, that way it's easier to quarintine/delete the multitude of fucking viruses you'll get

I have had two complaints filed against my IP from major motion picture studios (20th century fox, etc) so do not use edonkey, for movies at least. The best for movies and individual songs is Ares, the best other gnutella for hard to find shit, full album downloads (.rar files), and .iso's is Shareaza. I have been doing this for years and I wouldn't use anything but those two.

Bittorent for Movies etc.

Install Torrent then go here.

Thing about Torrents are, they seem to be most numerous for new stuff.

I use soulseek. It's ok I guess. I'm not a huge downloader anymore. In the last few weeks I started using it a bit more and managed to find everything I was looking for including some quite rare stuff.

A lot of torrent sites have restrictions on the numbers of users now, but they also regularly kick off users that don't have a good upload/download ratio so you can usually sneak in and get an account at some point.

That's a really good one for music particularly although it's got some other stuff like applications, e-books, comedy etc.

Here's a few more I know:

Last time I checked www.bi-torrent.com wasn't working anymore, hopefully it's temporary.

Here's a basic "How to" if you decide to use IRC. I never get much of a chance to linkwhore, so I'm going to jump on it when I can.

I live in Australia, so as long as I'm not downloading kiddy porn I'm safe.

So in other words I'm fucked.

ok people who want to P2P get this program:

DC++ @ dcplusplus.sourceforge.net

i recommend the newest version for users running XP and 432 for users running ME or some other equally shit WinOS

its a hub-based P2P system. REAL fast, and very reliable if you got a decent sharesize. read the tut, most importantly when you get it. oh and btw its open source too, so its constantly being improved

cheers,
HFB

Oh, and if you DO get Limewire, there will almost always be two corrupted virus files in each search results page. They will be named exactly what you put into the search field and will be in some Windows Media Player format and a .JPG format. Don't download those.

Limewire is the best one I've found (search download.com) that doesn't have spyware. If you have spyware after you download Limewire, it's because there was spyware on your computer before you got Limewire.

You could also use bittorrent if you want to download movies, tv shows, or full albums, but you have to find the websites that host the torrent files (it's a bit too complicated to get into in a few seconds of me typing out this response). Those are a bit harder to find than just going on Limewire and downloading individual songs, which is all I do these days anyway.
