This is not Bush's law it has been on the books for a long long time.
this is NOT part of the patriot act.
Section 2 of the bill amends section 879 of title 18, United States Code; the section that makes it a Federal crime to threaten to kill, kidnap, or inflict bodily harm against former Presidents or their families, or the immediate families of the President, President-elect, Vice President, or the Vice President-elect. Additionally, that section makes it a crime to threaten major candidates for the office of President or Vice President, or the spouses of those candidates. Under existing section 879, it is a crime to threaten these individuals only if the Secret Service is providing protection to them at the time the threat is made.
The bill deletes the requirement that the Secret Service be protecting the person named in that statute in order for a threat made against that person to be a Federal crime. As a result, the Service will be authorized to investigate threats made against any of the persons named in section 879 regardless of whether the Service is protecting them because simply threatening a person named in that section will be a Federal crime.
The indictment alleges that Ali provided material support and resources to terrorists, knowing and intending that they were to be used in preparation for, and for carrying out, the assassination of the President of the United States

If convicted of the charges, Ali faces a maximum sentence of 80 years in prison.
An indictment is merely an accusation and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty at trial beyond a reasonable doubt.
THREATS AGAINST PRESIDENT - 18 USC 871, makes it a Federal crime or offense for anyone to willfully make a true threat to injure or kill the President of the United States.
A person can be found guilty of that offense only if all of the following facts are proved beyond a reasonable doubt:
First: That the person uttered words alleged to be the threat against the President;
Second: That the person understood and meant the words he used as a true threat; and
Third: That the person uttered the words knowingly and willfully.
A "threat" is a statement expressing an intention to kill or injure the President; and a "true threat" means a serious threat as distinguished from words used as mere political argument, idle or careless talk, or something said in a joking manner.
The essence of the offense is the knowing and willful making of a true threat. So, if it is proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the person knowingly made a true threat against the President, willfully intending that it be understood by others as a serious threat, then the offense is complete; it is not necessary to prove that the person actually intended to carry out the threat.

Man, I live way closer to the edge than I thought.
I think I've probably threatened to kill or maim every President since Franklin Pierce. Does it count if the President is dead? I guess not, since the threat would be idle. But the Presidents ive threatened whose presidencies I was alive through i definitely threatened more often

The internet = its own domain. It is its own entity with its own applicable laws. I might just decide to threaten the president on here, you see i live in CA, so its a Federal Offense. However, when I typed that post, I was in an internet cafe in madagascar with some lemur friends, so the law doesn't apply. See where I'm going? You could maybe prosecute him for libel, ha ha!
loki, hate to break it to ya, but in reality its most likey been "President Cheney" for the last 4.5 years. Bush couldn't make cereal without a manual of detailed pictures and step by step instructions.

This has been around for a long time.
There was a guy arrested near here for threatening the mayor. I can't remember exactly what he did, but there was some sort of issue with his property taxes and he lost his shit on the phone and somehow said he was going to kill the mayor or something. The person he lost his shit with turned him in and he was arrested.
you know this would be a better story with real facts
